Miami 2001's reputation is bolstered by all the high profile pros that had great success. Just as an example, their top 4 RBs all started in the NFL. 38 players drafted, dozens of combined pro bowl selections.

But neither Nebraska nor Miami accomplished what LSU did in terms of quality wins. Frankly, I don't think anyone has, to date. We could have put 100 on Oklahoma - the #4 team in the country. :letthatsinkin:

Miami at their best did destroy some pretty good teams though

I think they put 66 on a solid Washington team that year

But LSU 2019 was so much better offensively it was absurd

Vince Young was not Cam Newton. If both teams played their best I'd expect LSU to win like 50-30 or some shite.

Chase/Marshall/Jefferson would have abused that secondary until they quit.

Their secondary was actually pretty good. Being they only had 1 legitimate receiver, I like my chances of making vince take off against our 4.5 linebackers.

Because, they beat a team that the ESPN talking heads had spent all of December saying was the best team to ever play the game.

If Pete Carroll doesn’t have a stroke in the 4th quarter and go for it on 4th and 1 without the most electrifying running back in college football history on the field then VY never gets the ball back.

Can someone explain to me why this team is considered one of the best ever

Do you really need someone to explain to you why TEXAS fans think 2005 TEXAS is the best team ever?

quote:

Texas w 2

Ohio State, Texas Tech and USC = 3.

Best Team ever is 100% subjective, it comes down to 2 basic elements, resume or schedule and overall talent. That Texas team had 33 guys play in the NFL 12 pro bowlers according to Mack Brown, (contrary to popular myth it wasnt just Vince). LSU objectively has the resume argument, overall talent, we will see how that plays out.

1995 Nebraska is the closest with 4 wins over teams that finished in the top 10, LSU beat 5 final top 10 teams (the 7 counts 8-5 Texas and Auburn who finished 25 and 14). LSU also played 2 extra games (SEC CG and extra playoff game). If you give 95 Nebraska a CCG and extra bowl they would have 2 more top 10 wins. They have long been my answer to this debate because of the resume and they absolutely throttled everyone they played. Their 4 best wins they won by an avg of 24, including as you noted the absolute beat down of #2 Florida who in turn destroyed #3 Tennessee and Weurffle was a very good college QB.

And they steamrolled everyone they played. I think the closest game was like a 2TD spread. What they did to a really good UF team to win it all was just filthy.

They beat unranked Washington State 35-21 in Lincoln. That was a fairly impressive 3-8 team - they played that dominant, GOAT candidate Nebraska team their closest game of the year. They beat a ranked UCLA team. They played very good USC and Oregon teams fairly close and they were a FG short of beating a ranked Washington team at the end when they were only playing for pride.

To go back to 1995 Nebraska - that was Schnellenberger's first season, but they CRUSHED OU 37-0. They beat Michigan State at East Lansing 50-10.

Their 4 ranked wins (K-State, Colo., Kansas and Florida) was a combined score of 196 - 73 (average 49 - 18). With a triple option.

Really don’t need to even bother comparing or debating.
Don’t care who the other team in the discussion is.

15-0
7 wins over top 10 teams
Heisman winner
Belitnekoff winner
Thorpe winner
Coach of the year
Most points in FBS history

All facts.Can’t be matched.

It sucks that Texas will never, ever, ever return the trip to Tiger Stadium if the game is cancelled this season.

Maybe people tend to favor their home team?

Just tossing that out there.

That's really what it all comes down to, honestly. Homers are going to, uh, homer.

Do I think 2019 LSU was one of the greatest ever (at least during the modern era)? Of course I do, but that's a defensible and not crazy position to take, objectively-speaking.

BEST ever? Like, over 1995 Nebraska and 2001 Miami? Gets a bit dicey when compared to those two, but even then being in the conversation with those teams is an exceptionally high honor...one that 2005 Texas (as good as they were) can't claim.

They are up there. Tons of NFL talent on that roster. Only had two close games all year to #4 Ohio State and #1 USC. They won one of the greatest CFB games of all time. Vince Young was unstoppable in college.

But they didn't have MOV like '95 Nebraska. They didn't have the talent of '01 Miami. They didn't have the resume of '19 LSU. So they really aren't in the final discussion. Great team, but just not GOAT-level.

They won the greatest title game ever against a juggernaut. Plus they had an unstoppable force at QB and a lot of pros, sound familiar? Can’t really blame them.

And beat 2 top 10 teams. They aren’t in the discussion with 2019 LSU
