Ageism will say they just need a decent defense and Chavis won't have to work miracles. Our offense will support the defense with points. Certain amount of truth to that.

However, there will be games (one or two a season?) that the defense will have to be stellar. I don't know if Chavis can be stellar with average talent, or even just above average talent. The offense will get the majority of the top recruits. Just how TX A&M has recruited under Sumlin.

Will be interesting to see an older Chavis at TAMU with the same scheme but worse talent and an offense that puts him in really tough spots

Penn St in 09
Ole Miss last year

And almost Ole Miss again this year

Half of our losses since the Capital One Bowl have been due to the opponent scoring in the final seconds.

Yep, Penn St cap one bowl with their band playing 7 nation army the entire fricking 4th quarter.

We all said the same things to UT fans that Aggy fans are saying to us now...

When Bama beat us with no time left 2 years ago we were man to man all out pressure screen killed us, this time we did the opposite played off soft zone, it happens.

Bama played Chavis for a chump on that final drive in 2012. Chavis went aggressive on the screen pass that resulted in a td and a loss. Up to that point of the Bama drive, LSU had been in a prevent defense. A particularly ineffective approach against a Bama offense that up to that point, had been smothered for the entire 2nd half by an agressive Tiger D. Bama only needed a field goal to tie. The prevent allowed Bama to easily move near field goal range. Then Bama knew when Chavis was gonna attack aggressively and called the screen. That loss was completely on Chavis. And I know that 1/9/12 was tough and trolls think that LSU has never gotten over that loss, but I actually think that the last second 21-17 loss was more emotionally damaging to the team's psyche and is what we have yet to get over with Bama. I am glad Chavis is gone.

Yup. John Chavis made Clemsons Tahj Boyd look like 09 Drew Brees on third down.

Mid season with injuries, A&M offense, and with their schedule it will be ugly for Chavis

That game was a great opportunity to undo the stigma of the NC game by knocking Bama back down a few pegs (and putting LSU right into the NC chase for that year), but after that loss it was pretty much a point of no return. The way they easily moved the ball on that drive (was never even in a 3rd down situation, not to mention the defense was off the field a LONG time in the second half thanks to Mett) was actually pretty embarrassing in retrospect.

The problem is no pass rush. I couldn't tell you the last time we had a sack with 4 down lineman.

Watching the TCU dismantling of Ole Miss brought back fond memories of old LSU D-Lines.

Chavis' MO was usually giving up an early score only to settle down and hold things in moderate check during the middle of a game. Then fall apart late.

I never worried about those first possession TD drives we gave up... especially the A&M ones. Chavis was good at adjusting... then terrible at closing.

Lol at this board.

What a bunch of sour grape sucking bitches in this thread.

This is your hate thread to help you get over someone.

Chavis was a great DC no matter how some of you butthurt crybabies feel post-breakup.

This thread should be whacked because its embarrassing and fodder for everyone else to copy and make fun of.

I think Chavis saw A&M as a good opportunity to get out of town while he still has fairly good credibility and bargaining power and could get the four year deal he really wanted. He also won't have the pressure of the higher expectations and increasingly more intense scrutiny from LSU fans that he must have started to feel more from the recent late game defensive failures.

He can basically go into a situation at A&M where he will be looked at as a savior from day 1 but at the same time, due to the outright defensive incompetence for so long at A&M, any small improvement will be considered a success and he will be given longer to "rebuild" the defense then at almost any other situation in the country.

Considering all these factors it isn't any surprise he made the move he did and LSU may have caught a blessing in disguise as well if we can make a good pickup on our end.

It's not unreasonable to point out his shortcomings in critical games. It's also not unreasonable to believe he won't have the same kind of success at A&M. He isn't irreplaceable.

My thoughts on this....
Seen his D keep games close when the O did nothing for years
Also seen his D give up some late game drives (d worn out due to inept offense at times?)
He will be MASSIVE coaching upgrade for A&M (top 2-3 DC)
Talent on D at A&M getting much better very fast

LSU will get a good DC and will get great D talent b/c they are LSU

I'm also pretty biased. I have an almost impossible time forgiving losses to the two teams living here..especially in that fashion.
