It does seem a bit bad form to have access to the building, take another job and hire within that building, but it's a promotional opportunity for Coach Rooney, so I'm happy for him.

No hate for CPM. Glad that he got a gig but WTF is SC thinking? He looked like he was in bad health last time he was shown on TV during the SEC tournament. No way he’s going out to recruit. College coaching is a young man’s game nowadays.

Is LSU still paying him a buyout or was it a lump sum settlement for “retiring”?

If memory serves, he was being paid to fundraise whatever that meant in the context of what he did.

He’ll have his work cut out for him, sc isnt a great job to have in the sec anymore IMO

Transfer portal & NIL will eat him up unless he has a strong, strong RCoor

But will he leave campus to recruit?

He’s only 66. Tony Larussa got an MLB manager job at 77 years old.

Personally was always a good guy, good mouth of the program but one of his biggest issues has only been exasperated by the portal.. unless he replaced the battery and the engine, I can’t see him grinding to get them back to the past

I wish Paul the best except when it goes against LSU’s best interests. But this makes no sense at all. He’s pushing 70 and was clearly burned out from the SEC grind when he retired in 2021.

South Carolina needs a young aggressive a-hole-type coach like Vitello. The best Paul can do there is be a bridge to a more long-term hire in a year or two.

Again, I wish Paul the best but this hire makes no sense.

serious question because i don’t follow MLB very closely:

Did Larussa retire because of chronic neck pain and overall burnout?

down the stretch, Mainieri looked like a guy that was constantly hurting and just ready to be done with the were and stress of a big time job.

Wow, this one was surprising. I really thought maybe one of the Tenn assistants would finally get a promotion.

Skip is the GOAT at LSU. Not Mainieri.

Because the surrounding carolina schools are all very good, and in addition, the sec east seems to be stronger, vitello is dominant, florida is still elite, georgia may be on the way back up and if you recruit that state right, they will be really good. Vandy is maybe down a level, but they are still good. And thats not even counting kentucky, who could be well on their way, but im expecting them to crash down a bit after this year

Well, this was a wild piece of news to find out at the end of a Monday. I think it was pretty clear he wasn't ready to leave LSU. And like Project mentioned earlier, it can't be a coincidence that his name has kept coming up for these jobs the past few years. And since he has nothing to leverage a higher salary for, it seems pretty obvious he still wanted to catch and was having his agent keep his name in the new because he actually wanted a job. Good for him. Like a lot have mentioned, I don't get SC's angle on this, but we'll see how it works out. It will be intriguing to say the very least.
