he went hard in the portal when he first arrived at LSU also, did you forget that?

When you take over a team with only 39 scholarship players you have no choice to go hard in the portal and even then when didn’t have full 85 scholarship roster…

"Notre Dame in Kelly's last season: #5 in final CFP poll
Notre Dame this season: #5 in in final CFP Poll"

This, people forget that BK's 2012 Notre Dame team reached the 2013 BCS National Championship Game, while his 2018 and 2020 Fighting Irish teams made appearances in the College Football Playoff.

When he sees starters and High School recruits enter the portal after one year for a little more money, he knows he has to rely on the portal to field a competitive team.

Right now, the portal is way more important than High School recruiting. It's a whole new world.

Why do you think Saban quit? It's all about money right now. Not the coach or the school, or even starting. It's the money!

I hope it goes back to High School Recruiting and "building" a team from that, but it won't until the money dries up.

We got dominated at times this year. Failure can be a huge motivator.

I think he’s done a 180° since the ole “we’re not gonna buy players at LSU” comment, for sure.

I don't recall him specifically saying that but I could easily be wrong. I do recall him saying we were not going to get into bidding wars and later seem to indicate he meant we were not going to overpay for players in the portal who were only marginally better or not even better than players we already had.

He also said that HS recruiting was the way to build a sustainable program and that the portal was a way to fill holes and supplement the roster as needed. This year there are a lot of needs, the portal was an inevitable thing IMO.

Brian Kelly is pissed and he’s adapting to this NIL world and I approve.

I think this is true. NIL seems to be ever-changing, as well. So ideas you had and statements made two years ago have to be reevaluated to meet the current situation. Having that adaptability is probably going to be a key to maintaining over the next few years I believe.

Absolutely . Adapt to the new NIL /portal College football world or get left behind . I am glad to see he seems to be trying to adapt . Good for LSU .

It took him one year to realize that all of the players are working on one year contract and then become unrestricted free agents.

l will upvote the idea that he sees ND soar while he sits at home with a worse record and does not have to deal with the academic records at ND.

You’re crazy if you don’t think BK is watching what ND is doing and how they’re “ahead” of LSU. It’s human nature not to at least peep at it and wonder. Not saying that’s why he woke up/opened up to the transfer portal and NIL, but his eyes are open to what’s happening in the world of college football and his former long-term team is in the headlines.

BK knew ND limitations will be that he could never win a championship there. Getting to the CFP is not his ultimate goal. Winning the whole thing is. He knew the best players could be attained in the SEC. That is why he came.

He is aggressive in the portal to fill needs he could not do in HS. He never said he would not get players from the portal. He said he is not going to pay a player just to come here. He knows to build a foundation is thru HS recruiting. He also knows there will be players leaving and needs to fill those needs thru the portal.

He also knows that if a coach or team does not change and evolve, then that coach or team is not moving forward.

I don’t think it has anything to do with ND. It about winning!

Great. Only took Kelly 3 years, at $10 million per, to get his head out of his arse and try to stockpile talent.

Fortunately it only took him two years to realize he needs competent coaches to win in the SEC. Glad after fleecing LSU for $20 million, he brought back Blake Baker and Corey Raymond, two guys he fired upon arrival in Baton Rouge.

Maybe in another 2-3 years, he’ll realize having an inexperienced and average offensive play caller isn’t a recipe for success in the SEC. At a minimum, maybe he’ll realize that to bring special teams up from the bottom of the conference, he should hire a full time special teams coordinator.

One can only hope. If not, he will continue to waste time and talent.

I honestly think he underestimated how grueling the SEC is in terms of recruiting. Better late than never I guess

Seems more like there's 2 different versions of Brian Kelly. There's comfortable/cocky Brian Kelly, and he makes some bonehead decisions (like hiring Matt House). Then there's embattled/hot seat Brian Kelly, and he makes magificent decisions to try to save his arse (like the defensive staff from a year ago). So, LSU is really the perfect place for Brian Kelly as we are going to hold his feet to the fire. It has yet to be seen if Brian Kelly is perfect for LSU.
