trying to prevent injuries. 15 yards will (potentially) stop players. 5 probably won't.

Not really, in the heat of the moment you arent thinking about that. You are essentially telling a player like Neal he cant play his position the way it is supposed to be played.

5 yards seems reasonable, but 15 is excessive.

I think it has to do with the fact that it is a 15 yrd penalty if someone engages him. Thus the penalties are the same for him or anyone that engages him.

I wonder if he would have been flagged if he would have just ran to the sideline, you know, for his own safety, even if he would have had to run in front of the ball carrier, causing that person to slow down for another defender to make the tackle? There could be a legit argument that he didnt feel safe standing in the middle of the field with no helmet

After that almost sack pitch out to LF. Very next play, Hawkins gets his helmet flipped off, Dlinemean rt in front of ump stays engaged with hawkins, no flag. Now hawkins pulls up on that play and hurt his leg.

So I have no issue with the rule, I have an Issue that sec refs are terribly inconsistent with their calls. It is just unacceptable.

Helmets coming off is so stupid. They wear them loose on purpose. This time it came back to bite us. A proper fit cannot be taken off by hands to the face.

No, but he's gotta know the rule. But like you said, the play was almost over. The quarterback was on his way to the ground/out of bounds. Neal didn't need to finish him off at all. I can understand if he might gain more yards or even break it for a TD, but when you weren't even needed on the play.. yeah you gotta be smarter than that.

penalty in all of football. When a player's helmet comes off they should just blow the play dead.

So in this scenario, if I see a RB break free of the secondary, I can just take my helmet off and stop the play...?

then why not flag it every time? I'm pointing out a play that happened in the game that didn't get called. That is the real issue here. Not the rule.

Miles should have gone to Ritter and say "You call this game fair, or I'll go to the papers. I don't care if I go down with you, but before God I swear I'll see every last one of you thrown in jail!"

I do not see that the penalty is of much benefit. Most head injuries i.e. concussions are caused by helmets. If CFB and NFL were truly serious about decreasing concussions, they would get rid of helmets.

I kind of want to agree with this, but then you would see guys trying to rip helmets off during big plays.
