Seriously though... Can he put his helmet back on and continue the play? At what point does it become a penalty? When he pursues? When he makes contact?
What sucked the most is that his push out of bounds was unnecessary. QB was going out. Don't disagree with the rule, just wondering what's the proper protocol

why isn't it a penalty on the guy who was blocking him? and I never saw how his helmet came off...was it illegal hands to the face?

He can no longer participate in the play. If he pursues the play he gets a flag, if someone hits him and he is not participating in the action, they get a flag.

i imagine that the "spirit" of the rule is that if the helmet was ripped off by an opposing player, then it would be a 15 yard personal foul on the opposing team and the play would be negated, so the player should stop playing and not injure himself.

if the helmet comes off because it's not secure enough, then the player should tighten his strap so that doesn't happen. and just stay away from the play.

well his helmet was ripped off via his facemask, so that should be penalty on syracuse. He doesnt have to lay down, he just cant be involved in the play anymore.

My question is what if it is an offensive player? Helmet comes off, breaks one for a td. Was he supposed to stop playing?

Yes and not only that but syracuse players kept engaging him while his helmet was off. We got hosed on that, Miles just said he will have a word with the sec office.

He took a right hand across the facemask that may have loosened his helmet, but then he was the one that actually knocked it off himself on a rip move.

I honestly don't understand why it's a 15 yard penalty when the only person you are endangering is yourself if you continue a play without your helmet. It shouldn't be equivalent to a personal foul. 5 yards seems reasonable, but 15 is excessive.

trying to prevent injuries. 15 yards will (potentially) stop players. 5 probably won't.

So I played in an Alumni Game in March and our DE lost his helmet then proceeded to belly to back suplex the QB. We ended up getting 2 15 yard penalties. So I asked the ref (being that I had never seen anyone get 30 yards of penalties before), his response was that there is normally a penalty on the other team to offset one. I said "Like a hands to the face or a facemask?"...he just said Uh and walked off... When you are standing up running there is no way for your helmet to just come off without the help of someone else committing a penalty.

Stupidest penalty in all of football. When a player's helmet comes off they should just blow the play dead.
