would be interesting to see a study done on rugby vs american football concussions. Players think they are protected with a helmet and too many times lead with their head.

honestly don't understand why it's a 15 yard penalty when the only person you are endangering is yourself if you continue a play without your helmet
You don't understand why there is a player safety component to playing without headgear?

It's stupid until someone losses a helmet and chases a play, and gets knocked out or seriously injured, right?

god our fans are so fricking dumb

Yes it would. I agree that the helmets provide a false sense of invulnerability which may induce the over enthusiastic to go in head first.

So in this scenario, if I see a RB break free of the secondary, I can just take my helmet off and stop the play...?

No you retard. A player near the ball and not on purpose.

This is seriously the dumbest thing I've ever read in my entire life.

The penalty is dumber

I kind of want to agree with this, but then you would see guys trying to rip helmets off during big plays.

If they want to rip off a helmet they'll get a 15 yard facemask penalty.

No, hell refs don't see everything anyway and if you see someone running for an apparent TD unimpeded why wouldn't a smart guy on D pull is helmet off...he has nothing to lose if caught but 15 yards and he may save a TD if the refs miss the call.

and I never saw how his helmet came off...was it illegal hands to the face?

Three separate hits to the face the last one was reaching around from behind in an uppercut fashion that knocked the helmet off.

It was most certainly a PF hands to the face.

not called of course

You missed my point. If a guy purposely takes his helmet off he will be flagged. The rule is already like that. If a ball carrier's helmet comes off the play is blown dead so if a player in the immediate vicinity has their helmet fall off it should be blown dead as well and it should be reviewable. Problem solved.

What about an offensive player who loses his helmet? Does play stop at that point? As for the penalty on "late hit" the SEC plays that way. It's more cerebral up north..... There was no need to hit the player b/c he was clearly going out of bounds. In our conference if they aren't out of bounds they are fair game.... Just sayin'

First off, he has been playing football his entire life, he should know the rules.

Second, What if he puts his helmet back on, can he re-engage in the play?

They were SEC refs. It was a bad call

isn't this rule only a few years old?

Helmets used to never come off...at least not like they do now

You may be right, but I only watch football and know the rule.

If you are playing football, you should have come across this scenario several times and know what the rule is. At least a coach should have explained it to you.

It shouldn't be equivalent to a personal foul. 5 yards seems reasonable, but 15 is excessive.

now i agree here. but thats how they put an end to shite quick

Ok I agree but don't call it a personal foul. Call it equipment violation 15 yd penalty

Eastern Michigan just figured out how to stop Fournette. Grab his helmet as he flies by.

If this was the rule do you know how many players in the secondary would loosen up their helmets so that they could "fall off" when a running back gets past them. A lot. That's how many
