He was an assistant ST coach for Joe Robinson on the 2009 LSU staff and was special teams coordinator at McNeese from 2012-2015. Here's hoping he knows what a punt return is.

I was wondering about that since he was paid well as OC at Tulane

Makes sense they gave him more responsibility to justify a raise

I knew the last name rang a bell. His dad, John Nagle, was a cornerback at LSU from 1969-1971.
Scott Long at DandyDon also mentioned this in his column this morning.

2009 had 47 kick returns for 900 yards, 19.1 YPR with 0 TDs and 27 punt returns for 509 yards, 18.9 YPR with 2 TDs.

It should be noted that 2009 had Trindon Holliday who accounted for most of those returns and yards

Holliday had 22 kick returns for 537 yards, 24.4 YPR with 0 TDs and 20 punt returns for 362 yards, 18.1 YPR with 1 TDs.

Aaron Anderson and Zavion Thomas are two great return options.

He has a very interesting kicker room to deal with. Hopefully Ramos can keep it at 80% or above this year…but that still means nothing 50 or longer will be attempted. That’s fine though.

AA was my first thought in terms of being closest to Trindon. Not world-class speed, I don't think, though.

Two of the more curious stats on your 2009 chart:

1) Kelvin Sheppard averaging 12.6 yards over 5 kick returns. He was a linebacker, so I doubt he was ever in the endzone to receive (I could be wrong)... but that's a decent performance to my amateur eyes for fielding squib kicks further upfield and advancing the ball vs falling on it... or he broke one long one and fought for a couple of yards on the rest. Clement & Foyil behind him are comparatively less surprising.

2) Stefoin Francois getting 5 yards on a punt return with 0 punt receptions. Was this a fumble recovery (from a Holliday/Jones mishandle) & return? Makes sense if so (you have to account for 5 yards somewhere) but just looks a little odd to see the stat like that.

If our offense is as potent as last years, why would we even risk a punt return fumble? Especially if our defense isn't improved?

I just did a screen cap from https://www.sports-reference.com/cfb/schools/louisiana-state/2009.html#all_returns

So I am not sure. That site does make the occasional mistake

I doubt he is but even if it is 80% it skews the return decisions to security. This year was an anomaly anyway, to me. I would say at least 8 of 10 fair catches were the right call based on coverage. I think there were a lot of higher shorter punts because when we did get stops, it was around midfield.

I'm more interested in OL Will Blackwell returning a kick.

Coach Fritz had him forever...Fritz is a solid evaluator of coaching skills.

CK has hired a bunch of really good coaches....I'm stoked.

What jumps out about these stats is how underrated Ron Brooks is/ was.
I always liked him, but his stats are up there near Trindons...

Here's to him possibly being more aggressive at going after punts which would by design set up a decent punt return game in that it forces the kicking team to bring more guys in tight to block and not running down to blast our kick returner.
