Not shocking at all. You can’t just blow the ball by people in AA or AAA even. This is about locating 3-4 pitches in all quadrants.

I know everyone thinks it’s about service time, but I wonder if it has anything to do with how often he’s expected to pitch and the volume of innings he’s expected throw. To me this could be about conditioning.

I mean he has only thrown 6 1/3 innings of pro ball, has there been a player over the last 30-40 years who has thrown less and gone to the majors? Even Strasburg who was seen as a can't miss pitched a month or two in the minors.

Ben Mcdonald.

Signed August 19, made his MLB debut on Sept 6

It’s probably a mix of a lot of things. They want to make sure he’s comfortable in professional baseball, they want to control his service time, and track how he recovers on a new routine taking the ball every 5th day.

I’d imagine he has a hard innings limit so they’d want to maximize that at the big league level so he probably won’t be down for a terrible long time especially if they get off to a hot start again.

2 starts in the minors that season and was in the minors the following year for 10 starts.
Probably be the closest example one can find out of all of the top notch pitching prospects really.

If he stays in minors til June it stalls his service time and the Pirates control him longer

Strasburg pitched 11 games in AA and AAA before making his MLB debut in early June.

Skenes has pitched six innings in the minors lol.

He was never going to start with the big club.

The guy got millions and he gets to be with Livvy. I don’t think he cares about starting off in the minors.

You are thinking small. Whatever he has, he is getting used to. Once he is used to it, it will become a bit of a drag.

If you doubt this examine yourself, because it has happened to you. You are in the playground of mankind - the USA. You live like a king compared to the rest of mankind.

The fact that Cherington is in charge of his career gives me pause.

Are you surprised? He's thrown like 2 innings max in spring training

David Clyde.
I wouldn't recommend his career trajectory.

He needs to work on still being a cheap asset 4-6 years down the road. That's why he's starting the season in the minors.

With Yammamoto being in the National League, all the cheap NL teams are going to slow play prospects because there is little chance to win the NL ROY draft incentive anyway.

Baseball politics.

I guess so, most here follow college baseball not MLB.

That hardly ever happens

Agreed.

and it has nothing to do with readiness and everything to do with service time manipulation

It has to do with service time manipulation when there is a player who is clearly ready to play in the major leagues. That may well be the case with Skenes, I have not watched him pitch a pitch in the minors, but it IS very rare for a rookie whether out of college or high school to be ready for the majors their first year.
