lol...I mean, at least link the article!

quote:

Paul Skenes, the No. 1 pick of the 2023 MLB draft, will start the season in the Pittsburgh Pirates' farm system, general manager Ben Cherington told reporters Tuesday in Bradenton, Florida.

Cherington said Skenes still has some things to work on, including adapting to a major league season schedule. He did not say whether the right-hander will start the season at Triple-A Indianapolis or Double-A Altoona.

For now, he will remain at spring training to work with the Pirates.

He needs to work on still being a cheap asset 4-6 years down the road. That's why he's starting the season in the minors.

With Yammamoto being in the National League, all the cheap NL teams are going to slow play prospects because there is little chance to win the NL ROY draft incentive anyway.

seems silly but whatever.

Strasburg pitched 11 games in AA and AAA before making his MLB debut in early June.

It's a way for the team/ownership to maximize their control. The sooner he starts at the major league level, the sooner he's eligible for arbitration, the sooner he's eligible for Free Agency, the sooner he's no longer a Pirate....

There's no reason to start the clock for a team that's not ready to compete.

Didn't see the article. Just a short sentence on an ESPN trailer at the bottom of the screen.

Were people expecting him to start out in Pittsburgh?

That hardly ever happens and it has nothing to do with readiness and everything to do with service time manipulation

With the changes in draft rules it actually benefits the pirates to bring him up this year

What do you mean already?

When else could they do it?

All they did was award the top rookie of the year finishers a year of service time regardless of when they are called up and give teams draft compensation if they have a rookie on the opening day roster.

But in the case of Skenes, the Pirates would rather him not be in the running for ROY and are likely willing to forgo draft compensation if it means they get an extra year of Skenes. They aren't going to be competing for the central this season, so there is no point in rushing him up.

I think Wyatt Langford is the only ‘23 top draft pick to start the year in the majors. Rangers are the defending champs and in win now mode. And he’s hitting close to .360 with three bombs.

The guy got millions and he gets to be with Livvy. I don’t think he cares about starting off in the minors.

Um the Angels had their 2023 draft pick playing at the end of last year and he will be their starting 1B this season.

Skenes will be up by June. He is probably capped at 150 innings between the minors and majors this year considering he threw 128 last year.
