This is of course not near as important as just winning ball games and getting to Omaha.

BUT... Skenes is 50 Ks away from Ben McDonald's 202 Ks record. This year he's struck out 11.69 per start. I figure..

1 start @ Georgia
1 start @ SEC tourney
1 start in Regional
1 start in Super Regional

Then obviously if we get to Omaha, he gets at least 1 start, 2 if we advance far enough.

If he gets 6 starts, done deal on the K record.
If he gets 5, very good shot, would need 10 Ks per start average
If he only gets 4, it's still possible but difficult.. would need 12.5 Ks per start.

Just a fun game within the game to watch. I think he deserves it so I hope he gets it.

FWIW, Georgia is middle of the pack(8th-413) in the SEC in strikeouts, just a little worse than us(9th-394).

I predict he hits the 203 mark in the 8th inning of Super Game 1.

Also UGA is throwing their ace game 2 this weekend with Coleman going game 3. Need to break this tactic curse in Athens.

Sounds like he'll have it in 4.

Skenes will defy the odds and go back to back 27 K outings to break the record.

That’s plenty of starts. Didn’t he have 29 strikeouts the last 2 weekends?

Breaking down Skenes' strikeout numbers

Updated post on 5/12, thru the Mississippi State game

Skenes is currently sitting at 152 strikeouts and 17.17 strikeouts per 9 innings.

If LSU makes it to Omaha he will have another 5 starts. If he averages 10.2 strikeouts per game in those 5 starts, he will end up with 203 strikeouts for the season, breaking Ben McDonald’s 1989 SEC record. By the way, Ben pitched 152.1 innings that year (Skenes has pitched 79.2 so far this year). Obviously, if Skenes averages below 10.2 strikeouts per game, he would need a second appearance in Omaha to break the record.

The record for strikeouts per 9 innings (not just SEC, but overall record) is 16.8. Skenes is currently averaging 6 innings per start. If he continues to pitch 6 innings, he would have to avg 11 strikeouts per game to break the record. Lately he has been pitching 7 innings. If this continues, he would have to avg 13 strikeouts per game to break the record. Just for reference, in 1989 Ben’s strikeouts per 9 inning avg was 11.9.

The national strikeout record in a season nationally is 234. It would be an incredible feat to accomplish this. He would have to avg striking out 17 per game for 5 games to accomplish this.

Here are his season stats thru the Mississippi State game.

Here's to LSU winning it all and Skenes breaking both the SEC season strikeout record AND the national strikouts per 9 innings record.

His Ks/9 will set the NCAA sigle season record if he holds the rate up through these remaining starts. Last I saw he was well above the existing record.

I would imagine the existing K/9 leader is a relief pitcher, correct? If so, wildly impressive for a starter to surpass that mark.

That is certainly possible. I'm not sure who holds the record. But I do remember reading that in order to have the record there is a minimum of 50 innings required. So it would be impressive nonetheless.

Yep. Just confirmed. Ryan Wagner for Houston in 2003..he was their closer. He didn't start any games, but had 79 IP that year. Certainly hugely impressive for a reliever to have a 16.8 k/9, but definitely way more impressive for a starter to do it!!

I don't remember him in college, but I remember him in the majors.

No doubt. Big Ben was just under 12 per 9 when he struck out 202. Skenes is over 17!! Incredible.

Pretty impressive. Watching Skenes this year is alot like watching Ben Mcdonald back in the day. Except he's throwing way less innings and putting up similar strikeout numbers.
I saw a stat on Big Ben, in college on 5 different occasions he pitched complete games and then came back and closed out games the next day. Also he pitched all summer on the USA team between his soph and jr seasons. In high school he threw 221 pitches in a game. I even recall Skip pulling Ben off the mound and sticking him in the outfield in case we needed him to come back and pitch again later in the game. Pitch counts werent an issue back then and thats what derailed his pro career.

202 strikeouts in 152.1 innings.
152 strikeouts in 79.2 innings

75% of Ks in 52% of the innings.

It’s probably a good idea to appreciate how insane Ben’s numbers were.

I predict he gets it in the second inning of his first game in Omaha.
