If you dig into the numbers, there are very few pitchers that can sit 98mph. I don’t care if they are starters or closers. 1-2mph drop is significant but not as significant if you are still in the upper 90s and have other swing and miss stuff. The biggest problem I see is his location and inadvertent hanging meatballs. His breaking stuff isn’t as sharp and his off speed doesn’t have the same differential that it used to. Obviously he’s made some changes this year whether they are intentional or not. I still feel very confident he’ll get it all worked out. He’s still a very good pitcher, he’s just not an overwhelming hammer like he has been.

The numbers don't lie, though I wonder if his off season national team stuff has just given him a tired arm.

He has a 5/1 K/BB ratio. Thats right around his career avg and well above league avg.

He's taking velocity off in order to last longer in games. He cannot keep that velocity for a long career. He can't win a game with the pirates in the first 4-6 innings, they suck. He's taking off some so He's able to last longer in games and get extra innings to get a win. He needs wins to get his payday. Doing what he needs to do.

They made a few adjustments to his pitch approach that didn't work and has made it easier for pitchers to identify his pitches based on pitch location, namely his fastball. They've tried adjusting it slightly but until the offseason gets here they really can't fix that issue.
They will reshape the fastball (again) to better protect him. And with the way he works there should be zero reason for concern. You can find heat maps online but a lot of analytical guys have a few articles on it but his first few years his FB sat everywhere this year they made the adjustment to just sit top of the zone and it backfired when all his other pitches (splinker, sweeper, slider, changeup) sit low in the zone and hitters adjusted.
His era is still under 4 which is sitll good. And he still has a decent whip. Its just when he does get hit, he gets hit hard.

It appears Skenes has not been the same dominant pitcher. But he certainly could return to form next season. Hopefully, he will finish the season with some stronger starts.

No, there were signs in the WBC game he pitched. Swing and miss was down in that game and that Mexican team had some free swingers.
Now he pitched more in his first two years in MLB than he had been in college and in them minors, even though the Pirates were very careful with him. Maybe it had a cumulative effect that we are seeing this year.

That’s the thing. Paul hasn’t been throwing this hard for “many years”. He’s been throwing this hard since maybe his year at LSU. His average velocity jumped significantly at LSU. He was still in the batting line up at the Air Force Academy as a sophomore and sitting around 94mph, lol. So he’s been throwing this hard maybe 3 or 4 years tops. Something is up with him physically.

He can't win a game with the pirates in the first 4-6 innings, they suck.
In Skenes' losses, he's given up: 5, 5, 5, 4, 3, 2, 2, 8, and 5 runs. There's not a lot of quality starts in his losses. He earned most of those losses by not pitching well
In his no decisions, he's given up: 0, 1, 2, 4, and 5 runs
So of his 14 loss or no decision games, he maybe has 6 that could have gone differently had his run support been better, with only 2 of his 9 losses not being squarely on his shoulders
This season, Skenes has 10 quality starts out of 23 total starts.
Last year, he had 20 in 32 starts. In 2024, he had 15 in 23 starts
