Sports pricing at this level has nothing to do with cost of operation. You can hire a Saban or six or eight Urban Meyers without affecting ticket or hot dog prices.

Only if you put a limit on the amount Bama can pay for players.

It would create the exact same issues as the NCAA has with paying players today. You put a stupid cap on the max a coach can make. The big boys will all pay the max, and then it becomes a bidding war for who can find a way to pay the most under the table, the same way they are doing with players (not just Bama).

BTW, it's not a good time to be pointing a finger at Bama, or anybody else, for paying players to go to their school.

So you folks say free market should be the rule. You must-be a liberal if you want salaries capped. That’s how unions got started, the rich get richer and the poor get poorer. Besides, how much freedom does the NCAA have if it can’t regulate its coaches, because of lawsuits for antitrust. Should’nt the free market alow organizations to make its own rules!

Saban was the first to abuse the rule and had a ton of high school coaches on his payroll. Yes, it needs to be enforced.

Should you have a cap on your earning potential?

No they don't. Rich donors end up paying for it. The university (i.e. tax payers and/or consumers) pay a very small fraction of coaching salaries. Buyouts and the vast majority of coaching salary payments come from donations to TAF. Coaching salaries do not dictate ticket prices to football games if that's the angle you're pushing here.

Another contributing factor to the massive increase in coaching salaries is the massive TV contracts in place now, giving programs more funds to pay out.

Regardless, the market dictates coaching salaries. Unless you're a fan of communism or are are fan of unionizing college football, then this is a terrible idea. The "haves" and "have nots" are no different in college football than they are in any other business.

Fans are nothing more than customers and customers ultimately pay for everything that every business does. From an Apple iphone to a Burger King Whopper, the customer pays for it. Should we limit how much the CEO of Apple makes? What about Starbucks? What about middle management? What about the person operating the cash register?

If your argument is that the 'fan (i.e. customer) ultimately pays for it' we should look at everything and every company. Is that really where you want to go?

it would apply to every single industry in this country. That is frightening.

I fear the day when someone starts comparing what I do to what I get paid. I am sure the CEO feels the same way.

No. I like the idea of people getting paid whatever they are worth to their employer.

If you are paying a guy $1M who is able to make a $5M profit for the company, but there is someone else is out there who can make a $25M profit but it will cost $10M to get them, then you go out and hire that guy who will bring in $10M more in profit.

Of course the fans and consumers ultimately pay for it. That's with anything. Every movie that's at the box office.. It's ultimately pay for by the fans and consumers. That's how it is supposed to work. The money has to come from somewhere.

The NCAA has its work cut out just to avoid antitrust issues as it is.

im not sure, but i do think there will come a practical limit to how many coaches are too many. at some point, it will lose effectiveness or just get in the way of each other - or be too much overlap and too confusing sorting through all the information, responsibilities, etc.

As long as the athletic department of a state university turns an overall profit, the football team should be able to pay its coach as much as it wants.

This is only a handful of universities.

Public universities with athletic departments that don't make money need to have fiscal discipline enforced upon them.

Let private universities do whatever the hell they want.
