Should People Jogging/Running on the Road Have to Follow Traffic Laws?

This morning I had to slam my brakes on because some dweeb sprinted into an intersection in the pitch black darkness of my neighborhood.
If you are running full speed on a road, you should have to stop at a stop sign or traffic light the same as a bike or a car.

I always assume nobody is paying attention, whether I'm in a car or on foot. You'd never catch me running into an intersection without slowing and checking.

Runners should always run against traffic and always assume drivers can't see you

Runner sounds like a douche.
I run a lot. Always yield to vehicles. If there is ever any doubt that they see you, stop and get out of the way. Run against traffic if there is no sidewalk.

The Booty Loop in Charlotte is a great example of bikers taking the full right lane that really just think you’re going to avoid them.
Wait till we have 40% foreign drivers that aren’t aware of traffic laws that will still outweigh Bikers by about 4000 pounds.
At a stop light, I purposely get my right tires next to the curb so THEY have to now wait for me for a change.

Unfortunately, the only joggers who learn to account for distracted drivers only learn the lesson once.

No, simply because runners should run against traffic.
But yes, runners should also yield to traffic.

We're supposed to. I never assume cars will yield at a crosswalk even if I've got the right of way. If it's at night I'm even more cautious and I have reflective or light up gear on.

Vehicles yield to pedestrians, but I do try and cross at crosswalks and cross when it's clear.
Friday evening, I had two guys step in front of me thinking I saw them, but I didn't. I was using FSD on my Tesla and it saw them and stopped, It's amazing how good it is at recognizing people, deer, etc. and slowing down for them.

There was a death in my hometown years ago from this exact scenario. Runner ran right in front of a vehicle on a big avenue, was impossible to see, and was killed instantly.
All charges were dropped after forensic review, it was 100% the runner's fault, but you know the driver still remembers hitting & killing somebody

I jogged till my mid 50s but rarely ran at night and if I did, it was never in the road.
But I’ve never been suicidal.

It's amazing to me when just driving in my neighborhood how many walkers/runners are moving WITH traffic! How this many people, some in their 60s+ don't know about this simple.rule of the road is crazy. Don't you want to see a car and have a chance to get out of the way right before it swerves and hits you?

Mostly people running do have to follow traffic laws. If there's a sidewalk, then they have to run on it, not in the street. At an intersection, the usual traffic controls about who has the right of way (which street has a red light, stop sign, or yield sign) apply to pedestrians too. Yeah, I know, a lot of runners think the rules don't apply to them--although in fairness, even more bikers and many drivers are likewise entitled douchebags who think they're above the rules.

There are laws for everything on the road including pedestrians and bicycles.
So yes.

My hood has walkers three or four abreast in the street. They will walk in street dead into the rising sun, it is hell to see them sometimes. I really don’t care. But you should be aware of visibility limitations at certain times of the day.
