LSU head coach Lane Kiffin was asked on Sunday's Zoom call to evaluate the Tigers’ offensive and defensive lines through the first seven games of the season. His critique was pointed: the offensive guards have been a problem spot up front.

“I think our guards play inconsistent. They play well at times, and then, you know, they have some poor plays,” Kiffin said. “I think our center and tackles are playing good and playing pretty consistent, but we do get some ‘big little,’ and part of that’s been inconsistent play at guard.”

Kiffin’s “big little” refers to small breakdowns that turn into big negative plays. He said those mistakes can derail drives that otherwise look productive.

“You can have some good plays, and they’re doing really well on a drive, and then all of a sudden we hold. Or then all of a sudden we don’t finish on the block, and the guy misses a stunt, and the guy creates a negative run. So ‘big little’ that way.”

As for the defensive line, Kiffin said the interior group has followed a similar pattern, flashing at times without being consistent.

“I think similar to what we just said about interior offensive line, you know, there’s some inconsistency there, but they have played really well at times and done really good,” Kiffin said.

He singled out freshman Deuce Geralds for praise.

“Deuce, obviously, as a freshman coming in, has done a great job. And our other guys have been kind of up and down and done some really good things, but we want to play more physical and more consistent.”

LSU (5-2, 2-2 SEC) faces Auburn on Saturday at Jordan-Hare Stadium. Kickoff is at 11 am CT on ABC.
