Jay was the second choice. The first was the Fla coach.

People only see coaching hires. So much more goes into being the athletic director. Keeping the power brokers happy and fundraising is a huge part of it..

After we hired Scott, I remember asking my uncle what he thought of the hire (he was on Washingtons senior leadership team for the athletic dept and faculty rep). He said he was a definite go getter and not afraid to go for big names, but he put them in a lot of hot water budget wise. So none of this is surprising.

Woodward has made great hires at LSU. BK looked like a great hire in 2022 and 2023. Now, BK is looking old. I have faith in Woodward.

Its not the hire. Its the contract length thats the issue.

And ironically, Woodward had the benefit of seeing A&M's situation with Jimbo to see how badly a 10 year guaranteed contract can hamstring a program when things aren't going well. At least for A&M, they have much deeper pockets than LSU

The contract Scott gave Jimbo at A&M wasn't the issue, it was the renewal done by the next AD.

Scott is a glorified interior decorator, a great spender of other peoples money. Sure, hiring Kelly created a media blitz and the buzz that LSU was a player. But just look at us.....all we have is our tailgating legacy to brag about.

Who gives a rat's arse about WBB? I don't and any fan who's being honest with you will say the same. The only reason people pretend to care about it is because Scott torpedoed the men's program. WBB operates at a $9 million deficit last I checked, and a large portion of that goes to pay Mulkey. That money could be spent elsewhere.

So, he's problem but he hired the baseball coach, women basket-ball coach and others? He's only the problem when shite not going according to the fans plan. Noted...

If some coach has national championships then he could get a better contract- other than that 5 yrs max with massive incentives

Personally, I think we’ve got a great AD. Kelly was a good hire when made, and Woodward is gonna have to figure out how to navigate this current situation.

I like our AD, and hope he’s our AD well into the future. He’ll hopefully figure it out with Kelly and what to do there.

Hiring football HC’s isn’t easy. Everyone knows this. He hired Kelly, and at the moment, it doesn’t appear to be working out… but it was as close to a “good” hire as you can get at the time.

He needs to be held accountable

At LSU he is middle management under both the TAF and BOS. He has two groups, not individuals, groups, that make approve/kill every coaching hire.

Not saying he isn't bad at that part of his job, but at the job he was actually hired for, bringing in a shite ton of revenue and running a clean shop? He has excelled at that job.

He is a complete and total failure at the business of hiring football coaches. He has done well at other things.

I do think if we fire Kelly after this season or the next which would give him 2 of the 3 or 4 most wasteful football hires ever on his watch, he should also be fired.

It’s just the contract, but that’s what it takes to land those coaches.

What is ignored here is that Woody's dealmaking abilities (or lack thereof) established this as the market with Jimbo at A&M

O drove the program into a ditch. Woodward's decisions to this point have ensured we'll be there for a decade.

You may be right?

Why was Kellys most successful season his first one?

His most successful players have been Orgeron Recruits, Thomas, Nabers, Boutte. Kelly's Staff about ruined Boutte.
His most successful recruits were guys Orgeron and his coaches had been recruiting. Cambell, Jones, Weeks, Lance Heard.

I certainly don't think Woodward would've extended him either.

People forget the SW extended O after the championship. Gave him a 6 year deal at $7m/year. No one was coming after O and O wasnt going anywhere. And just a season and a half later Woodward announced they would fire him at the end of the year and give O his $17m. O was happy to take it. Said so in interviews about how well he was doing financially thanks to that.

You dumb as frick if you believe this. You can disagree with his coaching style & on field results all you want but BK has rebuilt the roster & helped guide the NIL side of the program in the right direction when both were clusterfricks when he was hired.

That is tough. I did say at the time I never would've given O a contract extension. Where was he going to go?? He was already at his "dream job" too. Make him prove that 2019 wasn't a fluke.

At least Woodward extended him after he won the NC, which isn't the most unreasonable thing to do.

It wasn't after the Covid Orange Bowl like A&M did.
