“He’s a real pitcher. He’s pitching in the wrong league, I can tell you that. He needs to be in the American or National League.”
- A&M head coach Jim Schlossnagle talking about the LSU Pitcher Skenes.

LSU starting pitcher Paul Skenes lived up to his billing as a potential top-five selection in July’s 2023 MLB Draft.

“Every bit as advertised,” A&M head coach Jim Schlossnagle said of Skenes. “Everything I saw on video remained to be true. I thought we fought with him as best we could, but I’ve been doing this for 33 years. (Stephen) Strasburg, Mark Pryor, Paul Skenes. Those are the best I’ve ever seen.”

With a fastball sitting around 98-100 mph combined with a hard slider and a change of pace, Skenes struck out 11 Aggies, walked none and allowed no runs on just four hits in 6.1 innings of work.

“Thankfully, it’s not softball where he doesn’t get to pitch every day,” Schlossnagle said. “They have a good one going tomorrow and a good one going on Sunday, but that guy’s pretty special.”

He also said he is pitching in the wrong league, he should be in the American or the National leagues not the SEC

I somewhat did the same, thinking maybe he was just throwing it 99mph past everyone and that won’t play in the SEC. He’s shown the ability to throw multiple pitches in addition to his 100mph fastball.

I saw a stat that A&M walks just as much as they strikeout, and Skenes ended with 11 K’s and 0 walks. His numbers at the end of the year should be insane.

And he did that with the tightest zone he will see all season

The home plate ump set a bad precedent for the SEC last night, for a multitude of reasons, that all favor LSU

I’m sure he’ll get a call today if not already

I could see him being in a rotation for a MLB team for the start of 2024.

He’s the type that goes straight to AA or AAA

Paid whatever on StubHub to watch him pitch in person next Friday v Arkansas. By myself. Been a few times already, but haven’t caught him live. My son and I will be there for the Friday Tennessee game but that’s obviously a Thur-Sat series. I wasn’t going to not see this dude pitch in person in the SEC.

Yeah, that ump should’ve borrowed Dugas’ contacts. Dude was trash.

He was pretty consistent though. Balls and strokes were basically the same for both teams which is all I really want as a fan.

Him and Crews will both be on MLB rosters to start ‘24 imo. Or could be. Not only are they both super talented, their preparation, approach, and demeanor are already at a professional level. You just don’t see players this polished in college. They could both be playing in the bigs right now.

It will depend on who drafts them, who they already have on MLB contracts in their rotations and OFs, respectively, and if they want to be greedy and wait to start their clock to keep them under control an extra year, but neither of them is going to be in the minors long. They won’t need it.

He’ll wind up throwing too many innings for us, so the club that drafts him will be conservative with him (and he’ll likely go to a team that’s not ready to compete this year), but Skenes could absolutely get called up for a spot start or 2 or as a back end bullpen piece for a team trying to make a post-season run and really help them. Position players need to hit every day, so Crews wouldn’t be able to make a similar kind of impact and will finish this year playing every day and getting 4 ABs at whatever level he winds up at. And even though I think they both could be on MLB rosters out of Spring Training next year, they may start the season in AAA just to make sure they’re ready, but I’d be surprised if they don’t finish ‘24 in their teams’ big league starting rotation and OF, respectively.

Scenes is great. But the relief pitchers had their way as well. The umpire acted as if he had never seen a strike zone before working both against the great pitching and then at times working against the batters. He was consistently horrible. But I believe we will see better hitting teams than AM moving forward. This is a special LSU team maybe the best pitcher in Skenes and hitter with Crews.

Does Skenes have any obligation to the Air Force when his eligibility is finished?

I would rather see them call the "rule book" zone for both teams. He took 2" off both corners. An SEC ump needs to be better than that.
