same. we shoulda made it again in 87. both exciting seasons.

One, controversial, game (actually 2 points) short of the Final Four in the Superdome. That would have been a wild atmosphere and I would not have bet against LSU to win it all.

We can debate Dales in-game coaching chops relative to other great coaches, but no one was a better motivator. He knew people and how to get the best out of them.

So sad, I was really hoping he would make it to receive the Wooden Award. One of the greats....

RIP Dale Brown
I was a student at LSU when he coached the Final Four team of 1981.
I was coming out of Lockett Hall one day and saw him.. I said "Hi Coach Brown... He said Hi back"
A LSU Legend.

WOW!! When I swam at LSU in the early 80's he would always say hello to me if we passed in the hallways of the Assembly Center.

I am so glad that Shaq was able to get his tribute video out to Coach before his passing.

God Bless Coach Dale Brown

God bless you coach. You had a good run. Fell in love with the game and school during your last few years coaching. You will be missed.

Listened to "Tigers to the Top" and the Dale Brown coaches show many nights while I was trucking thru the Midwest. He was a legend and put LSU on the basketball map.

He was the coach when I was at LSU

Me too (85 - 89). I lived in North Stadium as a Freshman and while walking back to my room with my roommate the day before classes started, Dale Brown comes out of the Ticket Office and makes a effort to tell us, "How you guys doing today?"

Most coaches would have just walked passed without even making eye contact.

I still remember that to this day.

The only other coach from LSU that really made an effort to be nice to me was Jerry Stovall, but that was several years after Coach Stovall was the head Coach.

Both died this year.

RIP Coach. You made those Winter Months at LSU some of the best.

Tuesday night Dec. 5th 1972. This LSU senior cut T Harry Williams’ class in Lockett Hall to go watch the basketball season opener against nationally ranked Memphis in the AC.

There was added excitement. Not just were we playing a top team, but it was Dale Brown’s first game at LSU.

The buzz around the program was tremendous. We had a fairly new arena and a new coach who was stumping the state in true Huey Long fashion. He was talking hoops, giving interviews, and handing out nets all over the state.

After Pete the fans wanted more and Dale tapped into that. With boosters like Redfield Bryan and Frank Brian, and AD Carl Maddox Dale had what he needed to put LSU on the basketball map.

Well everyone knows the rest of the story. We upset Memphis in Dale’s first game and Dale went on to bring us into the national spotlight. He brought stars and super stars to Baton Rouge. He packed AC to a level that was never equaled.

I still remember that night. History class took backstage to a guy making history. Who could have known?

Skip and Dale within about 2 months. That's a huge part of LSU over the last 40-50 years now gone.

RIP Coach.

Also a great players proponent, pushed against the establishment, and very unique and interesting person.

His ego was also a part of it, but that’s the dichotomy of Coach Brown. I think the good heavily outweighed the bad. This one does hurt.

I will always love Dale. He was very kind to me when I needed some kindness. He didn't care if you could benefit him-he legitimately loved people and would help a stranger. He also was very sympathetic to the underdog-be that a racial minority-or someone who had been punched in the gut by an illness or a setback. He only saw character. Although I once went seven years without missing a home game-it is Dale Brown-the man from Minot-that I will remember,

RIP, Dale. I really respected you and am thankful for everything you gave this community. You truly were INDISPENSIBLE. Not many people can say that.
