While this is true as far as other "on-field" responsibilities, Polian is most valued for his recruiting and personnel acumen.

That’s not that much money for someone who is also recruiting coordinator (which he is doing well in)

His transfer portal evaluation this year was worth the salary alone this year. We can bitch more about ST next year imo

That $800/month for a car really throws it over the edge... I'm outraged.

Exactly.

We've paid a lot more to coaches whose predominant value was recruiting and he runs the whole recruiting arm.

By being a very good recruiting coordinator and recruiter for a football program that generates $100,000,000 in revenue.

He will obviously continue to be a coach due to his nationwide recruiting abilities. Is there another position that his coaching downfalls can be hidden? TE maybe? Or is it possible to bring in a young analyst or two to coach up special teams during the week and offseason?

I posted this in another thread, but it applies here too. A reasonable reason for the struggles:
quote:
I heard him on an interview the other night talking about how thin the whole roster is in general and the fact that they can't play certain people on special teams because they are too valuable to risk losing due to depth issues. He mentioned Major Burns as one who he would love to have on special teams when he gets healthy, but they can't risk it.

LSU isn't playing with a full roster and it's a hodgepodge. And this hasn't changed in the last month--it's only gotten worse due to injury.

This year is about laying a foundation for new recruits to want to come to, not winning 10 games.

And Polian says that they can sell the opportunity of playing right away to recruits. There will be plenty of spots available.

LSU has always played their best players on special teams, even when they were all-americans and heisman finalists.

Devin White, Boutte, Mathieu, Peterson, Claiborne - the list goes on.

When you lack normal depth, you can't afford to do that. That's why we see walk ons returning kicks and on punt coverage.

Also, I'll acknolwedge that the punt return given up was bad (probably due to reasons listed above) but you really can't put Bech fumbling the kickoff on Polian. That's a player (who's been reliable) just making a mistake.

I've been told here that's it clearly just a talent problem. We have better talent and Polian is a special teams God I hear.

No one has ever said this. You can’t teach high schoolers to be good on special teams.

You have no idea what you’re talking about. Neither do I, but I realize that there is a lot more going on here. At this phase of a rebuild, the number of games won is meaningless. It’s all about establishing a culture of discipline and about recruiting. Polian, and most of the coaching staff, should be prioritizing recruiting over game prep. LSU’s record in 2022 will not be a factor in LSU’s success under Kelly. It’s how we do in 2024 and 2025 that matters. Work on that above all else.

Little Scotty gives the worst contracts ever. Paying 4th highest salary for possibly the worst special teams ever at LSU and locked in for 3 years

I don’t disagree with this necessarily. However, if you are losing multiple games because of not playing good players on special team, it is time to reconsider the risk of putting good players on special teams
