30 years ago, on this day, January 5, 1988 Pistol Pete Maravich passed away. Greatest basketball player ever at LSU and maybe its greatest athlete ever. My idol. RIP Pistol.

Shaq was one of the most dominate forces in basketball ever, but yeah probably #3 at LSU. This board cracks me up.

Well Pistol was the #1 most dominant force in college basketball ever and Bob Pettit is right there with Shaq in that regard as well.

he probably is #3.

1. Pistol
2. CJ
3. Shaq

Shaq had the best NBA career of the 3 of them.
but we talking about their time in college.

Shaq is a legend and a Hall of Famer who had a better NBA career to be sure. He deserves all the praise he’s gotten. He’s #3 at LSU I’d say.

Pistol though is THE greatest college b-ball player ever imo, LSU or otherwise. He was light years ahead of his time, and in only 3 years with no 3 pt line he set scoring records which will never be broken. Absolutely unreal how great he was.

I sure wished this wasn't before my time.

I'd loved to seen him play.

You are correct. He was ahead of the times. I was fortunate to have seen him play many times in B.R. Simply amazing.

Had the privilege of watching him play in a "cow barn" John M. Parker Aud.

One of those nights he scored 50-60 points vs Tenn freshmen (before freshmen could compete on varsity). Probably the most instinctive athlete I ever saw. Phenomenal! Absolutely phenomenal!

people laugh when i tell them i'd put an all-time starting 5 at LSU up against any other school out there and be confident we could win.

Pistol
CJ
Shaq
Pettit
pick almost anyone else to ever play forward for LSU

My dad had classes with him and said he was a genuine good guy and fun to be around.

Top 5...during my lifetime LSU starting Line Up
1) Pistol Pete - guard
2) Chris Jackson - guard
3) Shaq - Center
4) Bob Petit - Foward
5) Rudy Macklin - Forward

Many other great players, but these 5 were dominant during their day

typically. until i remind them of the names.

they just automatically think of LSU basketball as an afterthought and think there is no way we could compete with the blue bloods (UNC, UCLA, Kentucky)
