Maravich had a very good NBA career but it was very close to being so much better. He seemed to have a string of bad luck with illness and injury and along with the NBA removing his chance to play with his 'basketball soulmate' Dr. J.

My dad took me to see him play during his Jazz era when I wasn't quite 1 year old yet. I can recall seeing him play for the Shooting Stars in the Cajundome (Lafayette) along with Meadowlark Lemon.

I also tried out for his movie and listened to him talk to the other kids in the PMAC. At the end, he gave all of the kids a chance to come up to meet him as he put a basketball at the back of your neck as he dropped it (i.e. goal was to catch it). I'm guessing that was shortly before he passed.

One of the guys he was playing basketball with (when he died) said Pete had just remarked about how much fun he was having just playing a leisurely game of pickup basketball. I think that playing the game was one of the things he loved to do most although there were periods of his life that it wasn't fun due to the negativity that followed him.

When Shaq can do 1/8 of what The Pistol could do with a basketball (with his eyes closed and one hand tied behind his back), THEN you can make that claim. You obviously have NEVER watched Pete play.

Had doctors diagnosed Pete's heart defect early in his life, he may have never been allowed to play basket ball.

Had court-side season tickets 10 rows up when he was with the Jazz (back when working people could afford those).

Amazing to watch. Named my only son after him.

Its clearly Ben Simmons.

PG: CJ
SG: Pistol
SF: Ben Simmons
PF: Petit
C: Shaq

Simmons isn't close.

The list isn't about talent, it's about production. Simmonds had nice stats, but not great stats or great results.

Simmons was more of a role player in that with 20 seconds left on the clock he was resolved to being a playmaker first and not a scorer.

With 20 seconds left and down 1, All the others listed were going to get the ball. There was no doubt they could be relied upon to score.

Jesus.

The guy had one of the best freshman years in the history of the NCAA with a coach that has the IQ of a sea turtle.

And this isn't about production, this is about who would be the best starting 5 and not putting Simmons at the other forward spot is just plain fricking stupid.

Yeah, I kind of agree.

Mostly because that lineup without him demands the ball, and you really need another facilitator on that court. You've basically got three PG's there, one of whom is 6'10" and loves to give it up, to 2 guys who love to score. The passing that would be on display from those 5 would be gorgeous.

Add Shaq and Petit down low and that's a REALLY tough line up.

I'd loved to seen him play.

Best descriptive term I've heard used of his play was "magician"...you literally sit and watch him and there was a delay in one's visual observation of where the ball was resulting from his feints.

or you could put a Tyrus Thomas type guy there for defense/rebounding

You should replace Al Bundy's face with your own.

Lucky to have watched him play almost every game at LSU, and many with the Jazz,

My boss was good friends with him, went to his home to receive many pieces of his things. Never got one for myself. His wife Jackie was very nice.

The best ball handler who played the game

I am a witness...

I SAW him play in '66-'67 when he was a freshman on the then freshman team. Couldn't believe it then and still having a hard time believing what I saw!
Astounding!

Saw him play in an exhibition game when I was pretty young. It was like he couldn't miss.
