"I called Tony and kind of extended the olive branch," Mainieri said. “We had our share of controversy in our sport years ago before I came here. Obviously, I wish there wouldn’t be any controversy. They have a wonderful university and a great athletic program, and I like to think we do as well. And the schools are an hour apart, and I wish we could just coexist without any issues. I happen to love the city of Lafayette. I’ve got dear friends over there."

Mainieri has signed several players from the Lafayette area over the years and has two from there on his 2018 team - junior right fielder Antoine Duplantis of Lafayette High and freshman outfielder/designated hitter Nick Webre of Teurlings Catholic High. Webre is not expected to play Tuesday, though, as he lost a tooth and cut his face in a collision with the tarp in foul territory at practice last week.

Its nice to take that approach sometimes but if we are being honest, players respond better to the "its us against them. frick those guys".

Will Wade takes zero shite from anyone, which is why we love the dude.

There’s no controversy between Paul and Tony.

If Tony had come on the air badmouthing LSU, it would be a different story.

He's good at being extremely professional publicly.

Example: Cabrera missed a sign at 1st on Sunday and Pawl reamed him out in the dugout.

Two minutes later, he put on the headset and did the dugout interview and was professional ad said "they" had to learn from it.

Complete 180 in a matter of minutes.

I have issues with his in-game management but he does do a lot of things well.

Two class coaches with very good talent. No need to gin those guys up with any sort of outrage, just playing each other is motivation enough.

There are a lot of guys on those two teams who know each other and may have played together at one time in the recent past. If they don't already, they are not gonna hate each other no matter what the coaches want them to do. Several of the kids who play together in a little league world series and at Barbe play on either team, if my memory serves. One is red shirting for UL right now (Gunner Leger).

Good to see this, IMO.

He kind of did 2 years ago with his "Our guys drink from water hoses" comment but we beat them and Paul didn't really care

But don't think Paul has thick skin or is above making snide comments about other coaches.
He made some subtle jabs at Cannizaro last year.

And Cannizaro deserved it. Miss St learned the hard way.

Very subtle, PM has great restraint. Just look how he handled Cannizaro getting fired. He probably felt like a kid on Christmas morning but he handled is professionally.

Maybe that’s why they were pumped up with emotion last game and had a victory dog pile.

Maybe that’s why Paul M. Had class and a loss.

Maybe I prefer an emotional victory to a classy defeat! So let’s kick some baby brother wannabe arse, despite this being their “World Series”.

Note to Ooh-La-La fans. World Series is a baseball term, not basketball!

Edit: If no one starts the shite, there won’t be no shite. But I like a little shite in my sports!

I hear ya, but Mainieri has also been known to call out players.

We hit a walkoff on Sunday and the players had the exact same reaction.

As shitty as we’re hitting, we should dogpile every RBI knock.

Someone just had to go to the name again. Uh la la wow how very creative, I laughed in 1999 when USL Changed their name and heard that. That was 19 years ago. Get over it, Miami fans call themselves the U and Ohio State is THE Ohio state university and University of California-Berkley call themselves California. People at Ole Miss could care less if you demand they call themselves University of Mississippi. Fans are going to call their teams what they want. I call our team LSU and really not a big fan of Louisiana State.

No coach-- I repeat NO COACH worth a damn says the same thing to the public as he does privately to his players. It may be all "coom by ya" in public, but I bet it's us vs them in team meetings.

I made some jabs too like the BS of keeping a 2nd base award from Tulane om his wall.....you work for an institution you are 100% in or your arse is out...

Glad to see the Can went to Miss.State and didnt stay or Im sure he would have got in trouble in BR...

Nope... But then again some of us have the brains to realize that these programs needed two very different coaching styles to be successful... Baseball needs a been there, done that coach which Mainieri is great at, he never gets too low or too high...

Basketball needed a high energy guy to pump some life in the program... No reason you can't like both coaches
