The Better question is why the hell did LSU hire Mike Archer when they could have had Steve Spurrier!

Seemed easy, at the time.

Mike Archer was the continuation of Bill Arnsparger's program. He ran the defense under Bill, he was young and upcoming, ready to take over. Had an elite QB and offense at the time, with Hodson etc.

Spurrier and Sullivan had basically the same appeal; former SEC Heisman winners. I imagine their potential was to "bring the offense"... we didn't seem to need that.
Hindsight is always 20/20.

Curley was a complete disaster, he brought an underdog mentality here IMO. Always seemed to talk like if we could beat Auburn (for example), it would be the greatest thing ever for LSU. No offense, but beating Auburn shouldn't seem miraculous for LSU. We should never consider ourselves a lesser program than anyone else in the SEC, certainly anyone not named Bama. That shite worked at Southern Miss, it wouldn't here. You come out and expect to win, not hope you can play well enough to stay close.

Dinardo was a decent choice, he quickly made a point of emphasizing that LSU could play with anyone. Funny, because he made his mark by making Vandy the scrappy underdog. But he knew the difference in programs.

DiNardo on paper was a good hire. He did bring in a lot of good recruits. Lou Tepper was abysmal and Jerry didn’t adjust well. He is to be thanked for pulling us somewhat out of the dark ages with Faulk and Faneca.

I don't think there's any question that DiNardo deserves some of the credit for the success that LSU has had during the 20th Century. He made Saban's job a lost easier than if Saban had had to take over for Hallman.

Didn’t read the response yet, but the answer is because TCU’s Pat Sullivan turned them down. Gerry was Plan B.

Do you know why the LSU team stopped playing for Jerry . I was at the Vandy game . The bell hops were in the lounge saying Bet on Vandy Bet on Vandy

The question is "How does a Joe Dean become AD at LSU?" Or Joe Alleva for that matter?

Sullivan was the first choice, but he did not turn LSU down. Sullivan "assured" LSU that his buyout with TCU would not be a problem. It was as they wouldn't let him out of it and Sullivan couldn't afford to pay it and LSU wouldn't pay it for him.

Dinardo was not a bad hire IMO. He won 20 games in 4 years at a school that, at the time, had very strict academic admission policies even for athletes (or so I was told).

Vandy's previous 3 coaches 16 seasons 1975-1990 overal 48-128-1 SEC 14-84-1

Dinard in 4 seasons 1991-1994 overall 19–25 SEC 9–22

He had 4 seasons with 2 or more SEC victories. The last time Vandy had back to back seasons with 2 or more wins was 74-75 and that was 2 different coaches. The last time they had a coach who did that was in the 50s

He brought the magic back, make no mistake. Pulling Kevin Faulk to LSU was the start of things. He set the ground work for Saban to move the program a giant leap forward IMO.

I feel like he was let down by his assistants. But that is on him. Also think he may have taken his eye of the prize for a minute. That is all it takes in the SEC.

No regrets from my perspective for the DiNardo hire.

I am certainly no expert but that is my take on Dinardo.

That 1995 Independence Bowl felt like the Super Bowl

yes it was after such a long drought. Seven seasons since our last bowl game, eight since our last bowl victory. Felt like we were back. Coach DiNardo also got the rule changed so that we could wear our white jerseys at home again. He did some good while he was here, but his undying loyalty to Lou Tepper, and losing so many players because his dog house was huge, he was doomed.

Gerry had a great 10,000 foot view of the "culture" here. His 'Bring Back the Magic' introductory speech (coupled with his early actions after being hired) was as great a rah rah speech as you will ever see at LSU and really tapped into so much of what had been missing for so long - and into so many things Curley NEVER got.

His problem was dealing with the culture here at ground level, which he never really succeeded at or "got."

That said, he shook things up a lot and got us out of the complete and utter doldrums we were in, such that in many ways he probably deserves at least some bit of the credit for what Saban was ultimately able to do and the team we became in the 2000s.

Hiring Archer was a mistake that LSU paid for....for about 13 years until Saban fell into our lap.

Originally Saban was not on the radar. Michigan State was happy with him and he was starting to gain traction there. He (Saban) took the initiative

It wasn't just being cheap.

Beware the AD who wants to look like a genius by picking out that diamond in the rough. Such ADs have enormous egos.
