I think it goes deeper than that. Saban seems to get 90 to 100 percent of the credit for a turnaround job that was at least half Dinardo's - if not more. Now, it is arguable that it is easier to take LSU from where Dinardo's predecessor left it to where Saban picked up than over those final obstacles

I've always said this. But so many Tigers and Tide fans that refuse to take my advice and go back and look at the roster that Saban inherited from Dinardo. Saban knew what he was doing when he wanted and took the job.

Yeah, if Dinardo wasn't so stubborn keeping Tepper around, he wouldn't have been fired. We would have been comptetative with him, and he was a good recruiter. However, he never would have been the guy to take us to the next level either. He might have been able to be in the Tommy Tubberville tier of coaches.

A big problem was that DiNardo actually wasn’t a good recruiter. He just looked like one. He did snag a few great players and got in-state guys to see LSU as a top choice again, but the 99 team was running like 10 scholarships under the limit for a reason.

He ran some guys off and had several who never made it to the field because of grade or discipline issues. He just reached way too often in recruiting trying to pad those class rankings and it ended up leaving us very short handed by the end of his tenure.

Things were A LOT different in those days. Another reason he was "good on paper" was he played at Notre Dame and he was also the offensive coordinator at Colorado when they won the National Championship in 1990. He was seen as an up and comer in the profession. Interestingly that Colorado staff had some very good coaches on it. McCartney was the head coach but some of the assistants were Dinardo, Gary Barrnett, Mike Hankwitz, Bob Simmons, Ron Vanderlinden. 3 of those guys became head coaches. Lou Tepper was the DC from 1993-1987 at Colorado and helped them have some very good Defenses.

Wasn’t Miles on that staff, too? I know he was at CU a couple of years before their title run.

Joe Dean wanted to pay pennies for a coach on the rise. He thought he found it in Curley, and tried again with Dinardo.

DiNardo stuck with Tepper and that was his downfall.

The bigger issue was that he wouldn't get out of the way of his previous DC, Carl "the Bull" Reese. You know, the guy that shut down #1 UF's offense in 1997.

In the end, Gerry was just a big, dumb, knucklehead that didn't know when to butt out (Reese) or butt in (Tepper).

Dinardo had similar success at Vandy and no buyout issues.
We spent years in litigation over DiNardo's buyout.

wrong, the biggest issue of his downfall was... being too arrogant to take Rich Rodriguez as OC when he was left at the altar by Tulane and his wife wanted to stay in LA instead of going to clemson

His time at Colorado could also be attributable to his not wanting to hire quality replacements for Watts and Reese. Made him a little extra paranoid of assistants that get a lot of press

The Better question is why the hell did LSU hire Mike Archer when they could have had Steve Spurrier!

Left Spurrier on the tarmack in Baton Rouge.

Hired Archer because the new Florida AD and former LSU head Coach Bill Arnsparger(sp)recommended him and who did Florida hire none other than the old ball coach himself.

I blame CBA and Brett Farve for the Hallman hire.

I bought my first season tickets in 1994, had a pick a seat event. LSU was averaging about 52,000 fans a game paid.

Joe Dean was a tool that had no business being LSU's AD.

That's how it is man, just take it in stride and move on because it will happen one day to them. shite, this was a while back, but I had a youngster come of age into his 20's and he was calling me old school and I had just moved into my 30's. Lmao It's ridiculous how they trash you out or put you out to pasture so fast.
