It’d be nice if he would keep the defense honest and bootleg after faking the up the middle runs occasionally. Imo

But the safeties have to fear the running game in order for our WRs to get behind them right?

That is exactly what they said after USC until I shut that shite up with the safety and corner that were constantly in the box. The safety had 9 fricking tackles with 6 that were solo. We can argue this but the OP is 100% spot on

Nussmeier is our best player by far at this point. It's not close either.

He can sling it but he's not calling the plays

It's in his repertoire, the problem right now, is the fact that basically only Lacy has consistently beaten people deep outside of Hilton and he's not available. With both in the game, that's when you will see the deep balls come more into play. The running game, at that point, should get better numbers in the box and better start having more success or that line will receive a lot more scrutiny for lack of production in the run game. It's important to get Hilton back and him to produce to see this offense reach it's full potential.

Do Yards per completion and air yard per completion

That would be more in line with what the OP is discussing

You can't just throw it deep no matter what if they have both safeties playing over the top, you're asking for an interception. He's being disciplined and taking what the defense is giving because the defense is dictating to him it's not wise to throw deep based on the looks he getting from the defense.

That is a fact.

If he hit a long pass every possession and scored, that puts the defense back onto the field with no time to rest.
The defense is weak and lacking dependable D Linemen. Scoring quickly would be detrimental, adding more pressure on the weakest part of the team.

No, he needs to just run once a quarter to keep LBs and safeties honest.

This. We run a lot of running plays with either a fake or option to keep it but he never does. So it’s worthless unless he actually keeps it nice in a while.
It’s a big reason our running game has been bad.

i can't believe anyone thinks i was criticizing Nuss. not. at all. Nuss is playing great overall. but we need to be able to hit some long ones. the coaches have to scheme it for us.

Nussmeier has never been afraid to throw it deep. So to suggest the coaches aren't calling those types of routes or he's unwilling to throw them is a bit irrational. Those throws just aren't really there, so he is taking what is there. If he were trying to force deep throws into double coverage people would be pissed.

Right now opponents are taking away the deep ball and LSU is not running the ball well enough to force opponents to adjust. Also, LSU really doesn't have any WRs that scare opponents outside of, maybe, Lacy. Nabers could beat defenders at the LOS with great routes and run by them deep. Thomas would surprise defenders with his straight line speed and run by them. Combine that with the fact defenders always had to at least be a little concerned Daniels would break out of the pocket to run, the deep shots were pretty plentiful. Thomas, Anderson, and Daniels are solid WRs, but teams don't fear them getting behind the safeties. Hilton has the track speed to run by people...but that's hard to do when you are standing on the sideline in a sweatsuit.

LSU is going to have to get deep shots off of play action. Unfortunately, the running game hasn't been good enough to force opponents to respect it.

Go read my post on this thread right before the post you commented on and you'll see what I'm saying isn't irrational. I basically said a good bit of what you said. I've never said Nussmeier is afraid to throw deep, I said they are essentially taking the deep ball away so he's taking what they are giving. That means he's showing maturity and a high football IQ. I didn't say the coaches weren't calling those routes either. You obviously are trying to read way too much into what I posted.

He has it in his repertoire. He just needs someone to throw it to.

Why?
How many times has he been sacked?
If the RBs can't get a yard in key situations, why should you expect the QB to run into a wall.

No, we need Les Miles 2.0 to add the long ball back into the LSU playbook

Les Miles playbook:

#1 No interceptions
#2 Run up the gut against a stacked box
#3 Punt

Stretch the field with the long ball at least 2-3 times per game.

Having Hilton play is going to significantly help with this. But, you cannot just say, "Throw the ball long at least 2-3 times per game." How and when you throw those deep shots matter. When teams are playing a 2-High coverage taking away those shots, throwing it deep into that coverage is not effective.

When/if they go to a single high then taking those shots downfield 1-on-1 can be very effective. Having Hilton will help with that because he brings a unique ability to the table and even if he doesn't get those targets deep he has speed to take a drag or slant 60 yds which stretches the defense and making them account for him at all times which could open it up for other receivers to get 1-on-1 matchups downfield.
