Maybe he didn't feel like he could take the timeout, since Kelly shamed him to the press about taking "50" timeouts in practice.

I sure hope the players are not as fragile as our fan base.

You guys need to chill. JD had his time to grow into the position but you expect Nuss to come out and be perfect when he had started only 1 game. A meaningless bowl game. he made 3-4 mistakes in this game. had he made the plays outcome is probably different. I cut him some slack for now but he will need to learn from this and get better. We will see over the next 4 games if that happens. One thing I will be looking at is his throwing motion with pressure. he has a tendency to "feel" the pressure too early and throw the ball off his back foot. Unfortunately we may not get that kind of pressure again until OM. Cost him 4 big plays Sunday. 3 that could have resulted in TD's.

Nuss will play better with experience and when Kelly and Sloan let him be himself, play aggressive and then correct mistakes. They let him play in the UGA and Wisky games and he showed what he can do. It's time to free Nuss.

When did our fans start acting like the are constantly in need of Midol?

IMO the main criticism of Nuss right now is he is playing too close to the vest or his recognition of defensive formations at the LoS are not sufficient enough. It's either/or or a combo of both but he needs to gain more confidence in his decision making and be more authoritative with the skilled players around him. He needs to guide them.

Burrow is the ultimate example. But Burrow was on the same level or higher as CEO and CEO had total trust in Burrow. It's hard to see CBK having that much trust in Nuss.

He sort of made the motion, and Kelly ran out on the field… either TO should have been granted or delay of game called. Worst case scenario was giving us an extra second.

Nussmeier had a far better debut as the full time starter than two Heisman winners did. He did a lot of good things and would be his own harshest critic on things he missed. Its all part of the process. He was also missing two key receivers.

LSU didn't lose this game because of plays that Nuss didn't make. The biggest contributing factor was the dumb selfish undisciplined penalties.

There were 2 minutes left in the 4th and we had 3 TOs, there’s no excuse to not take one there

Nuss will be fine. Give him time. Not many better qbs in the country and we get two seasons to watch him carve up defenses.

Yall have nitpicked and overanalyzed every single play, penalty, missed assignment, punt, tackle, throw, run etc. There's no such thing as a perfect football game, especially not week 1. The main difference in that game was our offensive play calling was horrible, the scheme was horrible, and the play not to lose mindset always beats you. We could've easily won by 20. Sloan and BK lost us that game.

the TD to Anderson was an audible. He's not incompetent.

I have no issue letting Nuss get comfortable. But if he doesn’t know to audible when USC has 8-9 in the box…we’ll be lucky to win 9 games this season.

I think what the OP is trying to say is perhaps Nussmeier didn't call a TO because he had been chastised in practice for unnecessarily burning TOs. Thus, he was "gun shy" to call one in that situation.

I don't think fans fully appreciate how much information a QB is processing in a very short amount of time. He has to call the play, make sure everyone lines up correctly, read the defense, decided if he needs to change the play, get one guy to shift, put another in motion, watch how the defense reacts, decide if he wants to keep the play based upon what the defense does, keep an eye on the play clock.

Many times the QB is almost going on "muscle memory". He put Lacy in motion...then stopped him. That cause a brief moment of uncertainty. Then he looked up and saw the playclock running down. Ideally, he could have (and probably should have) called a TO. The game clock wasn't running and LSU had all 3 TO's. But in that quick moment where he's processing many decisions the coaching of not unnecessarily burning TOs could have crept into his psyche and he chose to move forward with the play whereas in week 2 of camp he would have reflexively called a TO.

It's easy to sit on our couches and scream at the QB when our only responsibility is to drink beer. But there may not be a position in all of sports that has to process so much information so quickly than a QB.

I really wish he would have taken that timeout. It would have been the right decision 1000000%.

Regroup in that situation.

That's what I was getting at, as well as pointing out that Kelly has been saying things to the press that make his own players look bad. The criticism is on Kelly, not Nuss and the thread title refers to the posts I've seen here suggesting Nuss should have known to call that TO. Of course I expect every post to receive some level of attack that doesn't pertain to the topic or resorts to playground level insults because that's the Rant.
