The rules don’t explicitly require intent. They do require (for hits on a non-defenseless player) a targeting indicator. The indicators in the rule book are:

It’s ambiguous but I didn’t have a problem with the no-call. I thought the tackle was dirtier than the head-to-head contact as others have said.

It could have been called targeting, I kept pushing more and more on google just to see. I was fine with it not being called in a vacuum because I think the rule needs to be more clear and for it to also be fixed so we aren’t tossing guys out for non malicious hits.

The problem the sec has really developed is we have a pattern forming of them not calling late hits against our guys and then when you have a call like this that could go either way it not being called is going to get everyone in a uproar.

Then again it’s also easy to see things through p&g glasses and say we aren’t getting any calls but every team can do that. I do think there is something going on though with the lack of late hits being called against us. La tech we got a roughing call for barely touching their qb after he threw it, then they ignored DJ Pickett being hit way late, Sam being murdered in front of of them way late in that game and then Landon last night, any other qb flags are flying all over the field for that.

I’m more pissed at the refs for that, the blown offsides call and the deciding to not throw a OPI flag on their wr in the endzone, they can maybe excuse that since it wasn’t caught but I don’t like that we just aren’t going to call something because it was incomplete and we would decline it. Throw the flag and let us decline it

As much as LSU fans whine about calls, I’m surprised as well.

Vicious hit, refs are letting teams take extreme liberties with us all year. Wonder why…

It wasn’t targeting. One defender threw Watkins into another defender. The second defender had no chance to react to that. It was just an inadvertent collision, and that’s not targeting. It was a brutal hit though.

This!! That was deliberate with the intent to take out Green’s knee. The same player was ejected from the Florida game for targeting

It was a "football move"
