No one’s talking about missed targeting on Winnie Watkins

Why isn’t this a bigger discussion? This was a huge missed targeting that potentially caused one of our best receivers to suffer a concussion. It was a cheap shot too, his back was turned and he was falling.

I thought it was dirty live, but it wasn’t. It wasn’t targeting either.

Unless they changed it, intent isn’t part of targeting. Plenty of guys have been caught by the head lowering into their path.
I think intent should be taken into account but in the past it hasn’t. By the letter of the law the guy lead with his helmet and made forceable contact to Winnie’s helmet. Now was it his fault, no his teammate caused it

I agree….defensive player led with the crown of the helming and thst is the definition of targeting. Have to admit though, it looked a lot worse because fo the way his back bent when he fell.

It was a dangerous play for that defender being that he had his head down and couldn’t see. If his guy hadn’t hit Winnie he doesn’t hit Winnie in the helmet.
I don’t think the kid was dirty, but by letter of the rule or at least in the past hard to say it wasn’t a targeting type call. He had the misfortune of having Winnie being tackled toward him

I also thought it was targeting. Even though he was thrown into the 2nd defender, the 2nd defender clearly lead with the crown of his helmet and made helmet to helmet contact. Apparently I'm in the minority here.

I think people are missing the actual letter of the law on it and applying what targeting should be for which is a malicious hit with intent.
Targeting has needed to be fixed to just have a regular helmet to helmet call that results in a personal foul for 15 yards and a second level which is for ejections. It’s the most common sense approach, if you don’t want guys lowering their head and leading with the crown then throwing them out for an accident is silly. It always has been. Should also get rid of the if it happens in the second half you miss the first half of the next game.
It should be simple clean up of the rule but the ncaa sucks at cleaning up its rules to make sense

The Google machine says you aren’t correct, the fact another guy was tackling him doesn’t negate having the crown of the helmet hit Winnie in the head.

because he was swung into the defender I feel like they didn’t think one of the indicators was there.
He wasn’t launching or crouched and making an upward and forward thrust.
Iidk if he was leading with his helmet.
That’s the one I could see being targeting the most.

You can’t hit someone with the crown of your helmet if you aren’t leading with it.
By the letter of the rule at least according to Google, just because a guy is being tackled doesn’t mean targeting wouldn’t apply. The crown of the helmet was the big indicator

I thought the late hit out of bounds no-call was far more egregious. It was blatant and even the announcers completely ignored it.

If you want targeting, it should have been called for the hit on Trey'dez Green. The DB lowered his head and hit with the crown. That is defined as targeting, no matter where on the targetees body was hit.

The dirty part was the original tackler going for a body slam.
