LSU basketball was not very much before Brown made his run and but for a final four team hasn’t been much since he left. imo

Maybe that last part has something to do with him sticking around too long and getting NCAA sanctions placed on the program.

There are people that would name the arena after Will Wade right now and he only won one tournament game at LSU.

This is the one that gets me. Eddie Sutton is known as much for Arkansas and Kentucky as for Oklahoma State. And while he was there awhile and made the NCAA tourney a lot, he won a conference title twice in about 20 years.

Brown, at least, won the SEC 4 times.

Putting Dale Brown’s name in the same sentence as those other 2 is hilarious and embarrassing.

Dale doesn't measure up to those, but I'd say he does match up well with Cholly Mac.

It was a different era; the SEC was not a basketball powerhouse. Until Arkansas entered the league, the only national power in the conference was Kentucky.

And you don't become elite in basketball only by winning a title; Kentucky only has 8. North Carolina, only 6. Kansas has 4.
You do it by winning your conference and making Final Fours; Dale did that while being the only SEC program to give Kentucky problems for awhile.

Well he ended his career as second winningest coach in SEC history behind only Adolph Rupp. So…there is that….

I’m neither a big fan or critic but still appreciate him being the only guy who made LSU a consistent winner over 100 years. My grandfather hated him along with that generation, but I’d kill for that consistency. It’s what made pear so amazing, even if he underachieved at times. I think he’d have won big if the investigations wouldn’t have blocked him from hiring actual assistants and not bag men

I am 54 years old so I grew up watching the highest point of Dale's years and watched his decline. I also watched the Wade years and what the hardcore Wade supporters and worshippers refuse to understand and accept is that Dale Brown and Will Wade are literally the same coach. Both were great recruiters, both were high energy types who pumped the students and fans up. Both snubbed their noses at and taunted the NCAA. Both cheated like there was no tomorrow. The difference was that Dale had bag men that could never connect Dale to anything as hard as they tried. Wade was too arrogant and thought he was smarter than they were but he got caught. It took the NCAA 25 years to find anything on Dale.

Agreed. Dale Brown, at best, should have his name over a locker room, or maybe a broom closet.

But you don't need to name the court after anyone. Leave it unnamed unless someone's accomplishments are so phenomenal that naming the court after him is just obvious.

My feelings exactly. Some would argue Dale IS that guy.

Vitale has been blabbering on the last 10 years what a "Travesty" it is that the court had not been named after Dale yet. I've had relatives and friends express the same sentiment to me.

When they would ask if I agreed I would always say that I was ambivalent - that I had no strong feeling one way or the other and if it never happened, I'd be perfectly o.k. and if it did happen I would not lose sleep.

I can tell you I'll never say when going to a game - I'm going to see the game today at Dale Brown Court or Brown/Gunter Court or whatever. I'll say I'm going to the PMAC.

Hell, it wasn’t just Shaq. It was also Chris Jackson the best PG in the country and Big Stanley Roberts. Dale Brown & Joe Hall had a contest on who could do less with the most. Dale won. Barely

Really, you going to compare the status of Kentucky basketball when Hall took over to LSU basketball when Brown took over??

Hall took over a basketball program that just in the five years prior to his arrival had been to the elite 3 times and the sweet 16 twice. A Kentucky program winning 85% of its games along with multiple NCs is what Hall took over.. Brown took over a program that hadn’t basically done a damn thing in a quarter of a century before his arrival.

The fact that Brown was able to make LSU basketball known nationally and even somewhat competitive with Kentucky was a pretty amazing accomplishment.
