I would guess that most of the negative comments on here about Dale Brown are from people who were not around in the 1970's to witness the emergence of LSU basketball into a national contender under Dale Brown. Why all the hate???

I don’t know if people hate him. I think a lot of people have a problem with him and his crew still looming over and trying to exert their influence on the program nearly three decades after he’s retired.

All stupid decisions then. It’s not complicated.

I love to tell people a Fun Fact that we never got past the second round with Shaq at LSU and their eyes blow up.

He had Jackson + Shaq on one of those rosters. I think most GA's could get that kind of team to the Elite 8 on talent alone. Incredible.

gene actually won a title

That's why naming the field after Gene is legit. Who else at Auburn has ever won a title, at least since 1957?

He was not a good x and o coach. He was a good recruiter and motivator. He’s not at the same level as LSU greats Saban, Skip, and soon to be Mulkey

Titles, or no titles, as a player Pete Maravich was, and is, best basketball player in LSU history.

I posted this in the CJ thread, but fits here too…

In fairness, teams were stacked back then.

We lost to a Georgia Tech team led by Kenny Anderson and Dennis Scott in the round of 32. Georgia Tech ended up getting to the Final Four and losing to eventual champ UNLV. I'm not sure UNLV was going to lose in that tournament. However, LSU did beat them earlier in the year. That UNLV team had Larry Johnson, Stacey Augmon and Greg Anthony

So we are now going to name it after two coaches with zero titles?

Most of you weren’t even born when Dale coached here… he was great at getting the most out of his talent when he led that 86 team to the final 4.

As best I recall, UK was on probation & a Will Purdue led team won the conference.

Agree with this, but didn't Brady get more production in less years?

Under your reasoning, Press Maravich should have his name on the floor at the least.
No basketball before Dale Brown? I beg to differ. LSU played before a packed house all 4 years that Pete played. LSU was the most in demand ticket at any arena LSU played.....always before a packed house. And you say there was no basketball before Dale. that's a bad joke.
Sure, LSU didn't win any titles with Pete, he was strictly a one may show, but Dale Brown never won a title either and he had considerably more talent than Maravich ever had. Dale was a con man salesman and a terrible basketball coach. As much a I despise Bobby Knight, he had Dale pegged perfectly.

Easy solution…men’s games have Dale Brown on the court. Women’s games have Sue Gunter on the court. Bigger question…what if Mulkey wins 2-3 Natty’s, what do you do then since Brown nor Gunter won any.

Give the naming rights to Shaq

Shaq would be the first one to suggest Brown have the court named after him.

Like Dale or not, he is by far the most successful basketball coach ever at LSU and he directed some of the most exciting teams in LSU history and if we’re going to be honest in our discussion LSU basketball was not very much before Brown made his run and but for a final four team hasn’t been much since he left. imo

It's like they thought they needed to name the court after someone and Brown was a good candidate.

I’m surprised they picked Brown and didn’t just pocket some money from Valluzo McDonalds or Gordon McKernan
