My Uncle hated Notre Dame for voting to start participating in Bowl games in 1970

They ended up being picked over a 9-1 LSU team to play Texas. The Sugar Bowl got pissed at LSU and picked Ole Miss instead of LSU trying to get to the Cotton Bowl. So the #7 LSU team sat at home that year during Bowl Season. I wish my Uncle were alive today to see his beloved Tigers hire ND Head Coach away to coach his beloved Tigers.

He is smiling with Cholly Mac today!

Amazing how much college football has changed. The biggest brand in CFB basically said "nah, we're good" on bowl games for a century

Was this when they started counting for national championships?

My former dentist was a starting LB for Notre Dame in the early 70s, played in Death Valley in '71, and was friends with DiNardo. After my cleanings, it was always 3 minutes of him checking my teeth then 20 minutes of talking college football and LSU.

I kind of really want to go drive an hour and sit through a dentist appointment just to talk to him about LSU snatching Brian Kelly away from the Irish.

I remember first hearing about that story before the 06 Sugar Bowl against them when the paper was talking about LSU/ND throughout the ages. Didn't LSU or someone make a plaque or trophy with a giant screw on it to symbolize being screwed? That part stood out to me and I pointed it out to my paw paw and asked him if he remembered that and he simply said "Vividly, and I wish I didn't"

Me and him both thoroughly enjoyed the 41-14 arse kicking that proceeded

I was a freshman at LSU that year and still hate them to this day for that.

I am old enough to remember that well and Notre Dame gets some of the blame, but so does the Cotton Bowl who PICKED the Irish over our Tigers. That LSU team was one of the best ever and they did sit at home...

That LSU team gave up 350 rushing yards and no touchdowns on the ground the whole 10 game season. Broke my heart that they didnt get to play Texas and their wishbone offence for the national championship.

I remember that one well. Started my lifelong hate of Notre Dame. Knocked a great LSU team out. I’ve loved seeing ND lose since then.
Now We hired ND coach out from under them. Karma.

We were the best team in the country that year. Texas used ND to avoid playing LSU in the Cotton Bowl for the national championship. LSU would have killed them.

The worst part about that was that ND didn't go to bowl games before that. They claimed that their student athletes didn't need the distraction of the extra game late after the season was over. ND changed their stance late in the season. If they would have announced their change in position before the season begun or earlier in the season LSU wouldn't have gotten screwed.

I was a senior at LSU and I've hated ND ever since. With a passion! I'm happy with the hire!

My dad despised Norte Dame because they screwed LSU out of a legit chance at a natty. He's smiling down knowing LSU stole Ole Norte Dame's ball coach.
