That was technically a home game for SC as they were hurricaned out of their stadium in Columbia. Hence the small, but vocal, crowd for LSU.
And Steve Spurrier tried his usual "psych out" tactics on LSU by putting the Tigers in purple (the first time LSU wore purples for a conference game in Death Valley since 1994)! What in resulted in was a 45-24 LSU win, Derrius Guice running rampant for 250+ yards and a few TDs, and Spurrier declaring his intent to retire.

I just thought of one that I can’t believe that hasn’t been mentioned is 2018 Auburn. That was the day that I knew Joe Burrow was the freaking man. Derrick Dillon and Cole Tracy TYFYS.

Saban’s first year was the most fun I’ve had as a fan. Pick one from that autumn: Mississippi State at home that started at 8:45 pm was great. Home games were a party for a win-starved fanbase.
Yes I was there for the NC’s but if collective joy is what makes Tiger Stadium great, then that year had it most Saturday nights.

This game is my choice. Not so much because we took out UT, but more so because it marked a turning point for when LSU became a true power. We won it with our backup QB and RB using a very rugged, physical, hard-nosed style of play.

That's because expectations were much lower then. Fans often become victims of their team's success because it raises the expectation level. That means more games against teams your team is "supposed to beat", which often = less fun. Of course, I would not trade a perennial championship contender for years of mediocrity with the occasion good season. But those years where expectations aren't as high can often be the most fun seasons (if things go well)

But does that make it "underrated"? From my perspective, underrated means something that isn't regarded as highly as maybe it should be. I don't think that is the case with the 2001 SEC championship game. I think most LSU fans rate that game properly as one of the biggest wins in the last 25 years or so of LSU football history given the opponent (#2 team), the 10+ years of results prior to 2001 (mostly losing seasons) and the circumstances in the game (winning with a backup QB when Tenn had everything on the line).

I remember for that Troy game they gave out complimentary terrible towels at the gate. It was cold but I feel like as time has passed the coldness of that game is a little exaggerated, but I digress.
Anyway, because we were getting beat so bad, people were leaving and leaving their terrible towels, so I remember grabbing a bunch and fashioning like a beanie and a face covering out of them, and I looked over at another guy who had done the same thing, and we kind of just gave each other the polite head nod as if to say, nice ingenuity brother.

Something happened during the week between UAB and Tennessee in 2000. LSU football looked like a completely different teams vs the Vols, and they've never looked back.
I remember a Tennessee sportswriter saying something like the "mystique of Death Valley is a myth." Well Tennessee found out otherwise that night

2021 A&M. Coach O’s last game. I had zero belief we were going to put together that last minute drive with no timeouts. Think we got sacked the first or second play too.
Best play I ever saw Max Johnson make was taking a shot from an unblocked Aggie and dropping it in the bucket to Jaray Jenkins for the touchdown. Death Valley Magic

1997 Independence Bowl: LSU 27 Notre Dame 9
White helmet, gold jersey game.LSU and Rondell Mealey went off in the 2nd half and avenged a pretty big butt kicking by the Irish in Tiger Stadium just a little over a month prior. Great season that ended on a high note.
2000 Peach Bowl: LSU 28 Georgia Tech 14
Such an up and down year for LSU and Saban's first year.
We lose to a good Auburn team and a poor UAB team to follow it up and beat a really good Tennessee team. We're then blasted by Florida and then go beat a top 15 Mississippi State team and beat Alabama, at home, for what felt like the first time ever. We finally crack the top 25 only to have a letdown against an average-at-best Arkansas team in Little Rock. We all could see the momentum, enthusiasm, and upward trajectory despite setbacks throughout the year.
We go into Atlanta, play a really good GT team. We're down big in the first half and then just explode in the 4th quarter. LSU put up something like 20 points in the 4th quarter and we should all remember Josh Reed's incredible TD catch and 2-point conversion.
We finished the season ranked and with a ton of momentum and optimism heading into 2001, in which we won the SEC....

It has become fashionable to degrade Josh Booty on The Rant, but the reality is that he performed admirably in his only season under Saban (2000). He was instrumental in crafting a key four-game winning streak -- Kentucky, Miss State, Alabama, and Ole Miss that brought to Tigers back into relevance in the SEC. Josh Booty had been distinguished in MLB earlier in the decade.
