I don’t know how this is so hard to comprehend for some of yall. It’s an honor to be good enough to represent your country. He’s a sell out. 100% call it what it is.

Before 2020 pole vaulting Olympic medal count
USA
Golds-19
Total medals-48
Sweden
Golds-0
Total medals-2
The only success Sweden has now is plucking someone born, trained, and fully raised in America
I am fine with Mondos decision. He made it to better his personal self
But the idea America screwed up or needs to make changes in how we do things is so asinine when looking at the above
We clearly do a great job of providing training and qualifications for elite pole vaulting.

He also spent almost every summer with his mom's family in Sweden. You left that part out and the part about how screwed up the USA track and field selection process is and why that prompted him to compete for Sweden in the first place.
But you go ahead and clutch your pearls ma'am.

Anyone defending this choice is simply doing so only because he went to LSU. If this is a Bama kid we’re talking about then he can go straight to hell.

I think you got even more downvotes than I did when I posted my “why is Notre Dame without BK out recruiting us” thread in the recruiting board

i'd 100% take the money. and considering the evil our country is committing at home and around the world, i wouldn't feel bad.

That’s very easy for you to stay when it doesn’t affect you in any way and it’s not your money or child.

Dude it’s a sporting event. Spare us the jingoistic rhetoric like it’s still 1914

And if he came in 5th you and others wouldn’t be whining about it. I was rooting for him because of his connection with to LSU I will admit that. But if the US guy (from Ole Miss) had won I would have been happy as well. I wouldn’t care if he was from another school and also wouldn’t know the full story.
ETA I was rooting for Bolt especially in 12 and 16 because no one had won the 100/200 twice let alone 3 times. It was cool watching Mondo set a new WR and the other competitors including the US guy who got silver we’re rooting for him as well.

Why should he be given special treatment?
He shouldn’t but the whole winner take all trails is kinda stupid. Though off the top of my head the only time I remember it cost us/someone was the 92 decathlon. That said there’s nothing wrong with an elite athlete that has dual citizenship taking the opportunity that avoids that and don’t give some bs about “being afraid to compete”. That’s like saying a golfer that skips the Corp Sponsor Here Open before the Masters or US Open is “afraid” to compete.

God forbid the guy actually have to compete and earn his spot as an 18 year old
dude- he is the best in the world by far. Nobody comes close. Why make him go thru the qualifying and risk injury?

He's been the best for several yrs now, only getting better. So he stays at LSU beyond his freshman yr ( which cost him a significant amount of money just to be on campus with his brother), & while qualifying per the USOC' s rules he trips & falls on the runway, he's one & done. And has to wait another 4 yrs. But, God forbid, he's still a patriot. He's had dual citizenship since birth & has been spending his summers ever since with his Swedish grandparents. He's not "flip flopping" between countries. Sweden is legitimately his other home & has been. He & his family are 10000% Tigers.

Just this year Athing Mu, the defending champion in the 800 meter, was knocked out at the US Olympic Trials when her feet got tangled up with another runner and she went down.

This is the correct answer
They guaranteed him a spot
And he made the correct decision

One of the first things he said after winning gold was about LSU. He's also a son of the Boot. I choose to just add his gold to our medal count.

Except for the well-adjusted adults in the room. The reason why LSU fans are more understanding is that we have been aware of his reasoning for years and can empathize.
Also, it's Sweden, not USSR...

Dumbasses in La High School track pulled the same stupid shite on him -- having to earn his way into competing. They didn't allow him to compete in pole vault his Sr year in high school because he didn't qualify. He was invited and went to Austin by Sergey Bubka to compete in an event, his idol. And he went jump against the best in the world. What does La. high school athletic wussies do? They stick to the letter of the law. So, Mondo enters the 100 yard dash. I know he won the regional meet in Lafayette. Don't know if he won state that year. Mondo wanted to help out his Lafayette high team by winning points. The entire track qualification process is antiquated -- check out Carl Lewis's rant yesterday.

His mom is his coach & USTAF wouldn’t let her train him. Sweden it is.
I’d say the results speak for themselves.
