re: "Messy" and "Clumsy" hire

I am not commenting on the quality of the hire or not, but why would anyone care what Thamel, Forde or others have to say. The school made a decision, pursued and hired their candidate. Yes the hire has a history but clearly LSU is comfortable with that history and the current relationships.

Once The General told NancyState to frick off, Boo Coorigan immediately leaked everything.. not giving us time to formerly part ways with CMM before the announcement was made.
I think we may have slow played things to save a couple million bucks (to 4/2), but apparently NCSt settled on a $1m reduction to the 5m buyout.
Need to schedule them baws ASAP

Yeah if anything it was quite surgical
It’s crazy how little stir in the media NCST when they hired him, now the pitchforks are out again

Pete Thamel being all over our “dead money” being thrown around in our athletic department, yet these terms are not used with other schools.
The national media acts like LSU is the only school that spends a lot of money and hires who they want. And this is somehow a bad thing.
Meanwhile, it was the media who helped create the current landscape of NIL, conference expansion, huge coaching contracts, and ridiculous TV deals. Nobody is going to take their sanctimonious bullshite seriously.

how this hire was "messy"
The Kiffin and Wade hires were "messy" for Ole Miss and N.C. State in the same way that Hiroshima was "messy" for the Japanese...
OK, perhaps an overstatement, but indulge me in a little hyperbole!

Coaches move around all the time to higher profile job openings. Does every single big program poach someone else's coach get criticized? No.
The media is ignoring 2 major things in their reporting:
Wade to LSU wasn't even a realistic dream a year ago when he signed with NC State. Wade wasn't coming back to LSU to work for Scott Woodward. William Tate leaving to take over at Rutgers created the opening to bring in Rousse from McNeese. Then the football program continuing to regress under Brian Kelly ended up costing both BK and Scott Woodward their jobs, getting rid of the AD who threw Will Wade under the bus and fired him from LSU previously. If President Tate hadn't left to take the Rutgers job and if the football team had been playoff contenders, then Will Wade back to LSU doesn't happen.
And the ACC is not looking like a stable conference long term. Once FSU and Clemson either figure out how to void their Grant of Rights or the GOR expires, the ACC will be on life support. NC State is one of the programs that is a long shot to get an invite from the SEC or B1G, so they're going to likely end up as a G5 level athletic department in the future. Meanwhile, LSU has one of the richest athletic departments in the country to give a coach plenty of resources to build a program for the long term.

If it was Carolina- no one would say shite.

frick them!

I had that same thought yesterday. If by "messy" they mean "an absolute masterclass in hiring away a coach" then sure it was messy.

Those media folks are just showing their true colors. They think of folks from down here as less than them. They believe we should have coaches who are cartoon characters.
If you really pay attention, they always show themselves, but they just really slap it in your face during things like coaching changes. LSU is the villain. Embrace that role, because that's what we'll be for the foreseeable future. frick em

I’m not paying close attn. Thought I read buyout decreased by $1mln within week. Wait a few days and save $1mln. That part of “messy”?
LSU got the buyout lowered so that NC State could begin their search for a head coach before the portal opened. If anything was messy, it was the dismissal of McMahon. He should’ve known it was possible though because of his piss poor results.

They realize how much of a cash cow sports can be. Good sports can mean better economy in areas of success.

Nick Saban could’ve garnered $50m a year and it would be worth it because of the economic impact his teams had on that university and city.

it’s so weird that they’re calling this messy and clumsy…
like it went from rumor to don’t in 2 days.
I get we should have announced firing McMahon first but honestly I cant imagine he didn’t know.

Then they talk about how much dead money we have on the books from football and basketball buyouts, when no one should give two shites about it when:
Paying McMahon was the same as dead money.
Kelly was also going to cause football to fall off and the AD is basically a social security type ponzi scheme redistributing from football and basketball to the have nots.
If football fell off then athletics goes bankrupt

100%. The economic benefits are huge for a state that needs it

MM's firing was contingent upon Wade's acceptance. End of story. McMahon knew that well before this week. With that knowledge, he could have left for another job. But here's the thing, when you are 60-70 (17-55) there aren't a lot of "other jobs" out there, and there are NONE willing to pay you $2.4M (what MM will receive annually in his buyout payments).
LSU understood the leverage and the fact McMahon had none. That's why LSU could leave him in the corner looking on while it tried to hire Wade. There was ZERO concern of McMahon preemptively leaving on his own because LSU would have LOVED for him to do so and save them the cost of a buyout.
