Herb Tyler is overrrated. The teams he played on were stacked and he was the weak point.

I've seen all of these QB's play at LSU. Their stats are difficult to compare due to who was head coach, what offense was run, amount of playing time and supporting cast.
Not taking anything away from any of these QB's. For my money, Bert Jones threw the prettiest passes and was the purest passer. Unfortunately, "Cholly" Mac held him back and when he went to the Colts, they were lacking talent.

Touche, my memory was faulty, but we didn't get close to scoring

Threw less than hodson and Jones. So I guess those guys aren't as good as people want to remember.

Bert Jones is not only the greatest LSU quarterback of all-time, he's the greatest LSU football player period, most talented, tough and athletic QB of all-time

1. Rohan 'big purple' Davey barely over
2. Jamarcus 'purple drank' Russell
3. Tommy Hodson
4. Zach Mettenberger
5. Herb Tyler
6. tie: the two Matts
these are the ones I saw, I think from reading on it, Bert Jones should be 1, but I never saw him

Freaking Coach MAC platooned one of the best pure passers in the history of pro football.
In 1990, Jones participated in the first NFL Quarterback Challenge. He finished first in the retiree category and third in the regular competition (The regular competition taking the top three finishers from the alumni competition and adding them to the regular field of current quarterbacks). Given his strong performance, Bobby Beathard, then the general manager of the Chargers, wanted Jones to come out of retirement,[12] but Jones was 38 at the time and chose not to try a comeback.
The widely respected scout Ernie Accorsi is quoted as saying that if Bert Jones had played under different circumstances, he probably would have been the greatest player ever. John Riggins has been quoted as saying Jones was the toughest competitor he has ever witnessed.[13] On the eve of Super Bowl XLII, New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick, in discussing his choices for the greatest quarterbacks of all time, described Jones as the best "pure passer" he had ever seen.[14]
Bert probably was the most talented quarterback to ever play football, there was nothing he couldn't do and that three year peak stretch during the 1970s he was probably the best NFL quarterback his 1976 MVP season is a gold standard QB year just look at the stats compared to the league average, completion pct, yards, YPC, YPA, and TD/INT ratio ridiculous

That 2006 season made a huge difference for him from my standpoint, dude was simply unreal with that single-season performance and his Sugar Bowl performance

Yea with 51 seconds, no timeouts and the first completion was short of the first down, then on second down Hill caught it and ran backwards, then got tackled in bounds, short of the first down again. Sacked on 3rd down ran the clock out.
The point was it wasn’t Mett’s Fault. He played better than any QB vs Bama in the last 7 Games.

Too many eras, styles, expectations, coaching philosophies, coaching changes, shitty coaches, etc. For example, Jones throwing for those yards when I was in school with Coach MAC is like a spread offense QB today. He didn’t have the receivers outside of Hamilton and everyone in the stadium knew he would get the ball thrown his way. Numbers mean zero. Tommy Hodson would have won 2-3 national titles as our QB prior to 2013

I saw all of those guys play except for Y. A. Tittle. I will put Bert Jones first, followed by Jamarcus Russell and Tommy Hodson.

I listen to 2 guys here on atl sports talk radio that used to work for Cleveland. they say belle wasn't really a bad guy, just fighting the drinking demon. they say the true a$$hole was Kenny lofton. was also when he came to the braves.

My personal experience was amazing, so I would tend to agree with anyone who was around him all the time to comment.
Never heard that about Lofton, that’s interesting. Dude was a hell of a centerfielder and lead off man.

ive been a braves fan since the late 70's. it was no secret that lofton was not well liked here. in the clubhouse and by the media. people didn't pull crap with bobby cox and terry Pendleton.
