LSU is one of the top 15-20 programs all time in my opinion, but since their turn around in 2001 we have been a top 5-10 program. That was over a decade ago.

Do you think the program as a whole that saban and miles have built has long term staying power like the classic Bama's, notre dames, OUs, Michigans, etc...

My view is that LSU is a power that should be around for the next 20-30 year with the advances the school made in such a short amount of time.

I believe that as long as we have state of the art facilities (read: constantly improving) we will be a big time program who will pass alot of the great all time programs within the next several years.

Of course a bad hire after Miles could mean that we go back into mediocrity but I think using spectacular facilities, a great fan base, and fertile recruiting grounds will allow us to be strong for as long as TAF and LSU higher Ups want us to be.

Miles already turned down Michigan. LSU has the money to keep him unless he goes to the NFL. He'll be around a long time unless he gets fired. If he wants he can create a legacy at LSU

LSU will have to continually put money into the football program so it doesn't become stagnant. It is truly an arms race.

I'm just thinking really far into the future.

Notre Dame now is not the Notre Dame of old but their history is still amazing. As is Michigan.

But with all these former glories being mediocre, will LSU make up tha ground.

Think of the former powers that are now out of the spotlight.

Michigan, ND, Nebraska, Penn State, etc...

Well #1 we're more like top 12-15 pre-Saban and Top 10-12 now. We have a lot of work to do to catch those top 9 or so but we can do it in the next 20-30 years if we stay on top of our game. The SEC remaining the #1 conference is important in this as well.

Nothing lasts forever and every program suffers bad stretches but the money, recruiting, and most of all expectations are there. Fans won't put up with another stretch like the 90s.

I agree. So was Saban. I said ULESS he leaves for the NFL. just because we think he would be bad doesn't mean that would stop him if he was offered. I was merely stating the .0001% probability.

Wait rt now we are a top 3 program. We have proved that on the field. Im not looking at total wins, im talking about actually having a chance to win the bcs title. I really only see 4 teams that could, and luckily 2 will get knocked out in the regular season.

Maybe a sleeper comes, but i doubt it.

Barring some type of major scandal/sanctions, I agree. Even if we have a sub-par year every now and then, our ability to basically hand pick the top talent in the state and recruit well out of state as well as develop elite prospects is a recipe for long term stability/success.

i think youve neglected to mention the most important factor in keeping a program sustainable: recruiting grounds. fact is, LSU became dominant when they kept LA kids in state. barring catastrophic events, LSU football could easily survive a bum hire or 2. like any program, its about getting the right coach. team the right coach with LSU's resources and you have the making for a top 5 program over the last decade.

First of all, LSU has traditionally been a top 10-15 program, only now they're entering top 10 territory.

LSU has a football coach entering his 8th season for the first time since 1969. People say that Miles is just continuing what Saban started, and while there's truth to that, it's not the whole truth. It's not easy taking a powerhouse program and continuing on as a powerhouse. Who else has done this?

It will be hard to replace Miles whenever he leaves, so there will likely be a decline.

Well it begs the question, who are the teams that are considered more prominent than LSU over the history ofcollege football and what will it take to surpass them, I.e. championships, heisman trophy winners, wins-losses, etc. Personally the only teams that are supposedly ahead would be Notre Dame, USC, Oklahoma, Nebraska, Penn State (only bc of Paterno mostly), Ohio State, Michigan, Alabama (unfortunately), Miami, Florida State, Texas (maybe). Am I missing another team....

All depends on the next coach. I personally think our program has the profile now to get a big time coach and make a lot of good coaches at lesser schools think hard. It's all about recruiting and the coaching staff. Not sure he follows Miles(depends on when Miles leaves) but I think Frank Wilson will one day be our head coach. In that scenario, we'll be just fine.

Were a 10-15 all time program. As long as we keep decent to good coach and lock down Louisiana talent we'll be fine. Think about the talent that we've missed in Louisiana. Peyton and Eli Manning, Ed Reed and Matt Forte just to name a couple.

Well 1st off Bama and notre Dame won a national title almost every decade. They would have down years, but it's hard to compare each had god runs for 25 years. We need to another title or 2.

If you look at the long term history of dominate teams in the college football you will see that this is very Much a cyclical phenomenon . And the winning cycles of those teams have gotten progressively shorter in the last 20 - 30 yrs. Compare FSU, Florida, Miami with the older dynasties such as Michigan, Texas ,Notre Dame ,Gumps etc and you will see what I mean.

LSU has 9 NC's by Bama standards. We don't claim titles that aren't awarded by UPI(Coaches poll) or AP. Bama does.
