Coach Stovall was a truly wonderful human. RIP.

Didn't want to be coach, but stepped in after Rein's plane crash like a good soldier.

Quality individual who loved the Tigers and answered the call to help his Alma Mater in its time of need after the tragedy of Bo Rein's death.
This. How he handled this - and even being let go by LSU, spoke more to me about the man than any of his football accolades.
Pure dignity, grace and class...will be missed.

Great team in 1982 but a much greater man. A true ambassador for LSU.
Because it was the first LSU team in my memory to beat Bear Bryant, that team will always be super special to me. And Stovall got most of those great players on that team to come here. Dalton is still my favorite all time Tiger.
Went to that Orange Bowl that year, almost beat a stud Nebraska team - took them to the end.
Stovall was also a 3-time all-pro at safety in the NFL.

The whipping they put on Florida in 1982 was just special…

That's when we found out the kid from Patterson was even better than his much more highly recruited backfield mate Gary James. He put on a show that game.

LSU brought him in to talk to recruits on many occasions, and he always asked them what happens if you sign with school xyz and you blow out your knee?
Would you rather be there or at home at LSU?

I was a freshman in 1982, and my first Sunday I went to Sunday School @ University Baptist (shocker, right?)
In walks the teacher and it's none other than Coach Jerry Stovall! Almost fell out of my chair!
Obviously he didn't make it after away games, but after Saturday night home games, he was usually there, teaching the Word!
See you soon, Coach!

RIP coach Stovall. One of the few LSU football head coaches I have met and one of my heroes growing up. A great role model for many young fans to emulate.
