Losing a competitive game against a non conference opponent in the first game of the season doesn't hurt your chances of getting in the playoffs.
Yes, it does.

If you don't win your conference,

Then win your conference. Even with a non con loss with a good P5 team for your first game, you'll still get in.

Away games at Hawaii

I know UCLA started their 2021 season with a week 0 game v Hawaii, but it was in Pasadena. Florida State started 2022 with Week 0 v Duquesne, who did play @ Hawaii in week 4.

So Hawaii is the key to a week 0 contest, but the team scheduling week 0 can play Hawaii either at home or on the road.

Wrong. Only Hawaii can schedule a week 0 game home or away. Any team that travels to Hawaii can schedule a week 0 game. Only because of the fact that Duquesne traveled to play Hawaii in 2022 could they schedule a week 0 game in 2022. That is why your "schedule Duquesne week 0 every year" is pure BS. See link below for explanation.

Week 0 explained

Applicable excerpt from link:

However, beginning in 2016, the NCAA took things even further. Hawaii — and any team that travels to the islands for a game — is permitted to begin their season a week early. This year, the Rainbow Warriors open by hosting an SEC foe in Vanderbilt during Week 0.

That’s also why teams with road games in Hawaii, such as UNLV and Duquesne — who opens at Florida State next Saturday — are permitted to play.

The statement is that losing an OOC game hurts a team's chance of making the playoffs... your response doesn't refute that argument.

For the sake of discussion, look at Penn State. If you project the 12 team rules back to 2014, Penn State would make the playoffs 5 times. Once as Big 10 champ, 4 other at-large bids. This, going by final rankings before the bowls.
They lose an OOC game any of those 4 years, they don't get in.

Looking at that, they would be idiots to schedule a tough OOC game going forward. They are finishing high enough to get in, if they want a good opponent to add, you wait and play that team in the postseason.

wow! Didn’t realize we were playing Clemson. Are those home and home or are they “neutral” site games?

Quit being a bitch. It’s only a problem when the opponent gets their warmup game in week 0. Big early matchups bring excitement all offseason.

Yeah that's my only issue. It sucks when one team has already had a game to work on things and get a good look at their roster. It's nice to play a lightweight in the first game to get the nerves out of the way and kinks worked out.

But I love when LSU faces other P5 schools, especially blue blood type programs. Florida State isn't the beast they were back in the day but they are still Florida State. They're going to have athletes and speed and guys who play on Sunday. They proved to be a good team last season so a win against them could be big if they end up making a run at the ACC.

Vanderbilt playing Hawaii in week 0 in tuneup for Alabama A&M in week 1. I don’t see Alabama A&M complaining about it.

With the 12 team playoff format coming soon, LSU needs to start the season with another Power 5 team. That way if LSU does lose, the reason is new players or system or whatever. Playing a cupcake week 1 does not do LSU any good bc if they lose week 2 to a power 5 team, then week 1 win is meaningless.

Play the best schedule and not be afraid of competition. The talking heads would say LSU is not afraid to play teams and not looking for easy wins. Will bode well when it comes time for CFP committee to look at whole body of work.

Teams like Alabama,Georgia,Michigan don't play week 0 games OR AGAINST teams that schedule week 0 games because their athletic departments are not STUPID enough to sign/agree to season openers which allow that B.S. on the flip side, Verge Ausberry @ LSU, apparently IS that stupid and his 'higher ups' don't seem to mind...lol I would think B. Kelly has 'solved' our recent scheduling issues !

I agree. Let the big out of conference game be in the 2nd week of the season. That first game under the lights is really important to see where our problems lie. I believe if we would have played Fla St 2nd game, we would not have had a FG and extra point blocked and LSU would have won that game. Little details like line blocking on extra points could be fixed between game 1 and 2, and it might make a difference in W or L.

If you are a player do you get more focused in spring practice or in August knowing you have FSU the first game of the year and not Grambling/La Tech?

The same folks who get mad that teams have so many cupcakes on the schedule want us to schedule more cupcakes.

Now more than ever you should play a marquee game....losing will not matter as much as the discussion early. And lets face it, the networks will push the highest ranking possible for involved teams. Starting with a huge foot up for expanded playoff.

This is my point too.

There's GOING to be a cupcake on the schedule. I'd rather it be game one, so we can work out the kinks on some technical stuff, instead of week 9. That way, you're at least hitting on all cylinders when you face that P5 team.
Fla St last year, Va Tech in 2002, Wisconsin 2016, even Miss State in 2020 and UCLA in 2021. Those are all games we could, maybe likely win, if it's week 2.
For all those guys who puff out their chests and say "we don't need no stinkin' warmup game", I just listed 5 times we did.

you honestly think our Special Teams coach would've fixed in one week, when he didn't fix ANYTHING all year?

He had all spring and fall to coach up his ST guys, and they were awful all year. Nothing was going to change between weeks 1 and 2.

Jesus that's a whole lot of what ifs! I'm sure any team can play the same what if game but the fact of the matter is they were losses and not wins.
