With playoffs soon, it actually makes sense now.

Iron sharpens iron. You play solid out of conference teams to be more battle tested.

2003 Arizona
2007 VaTech
2011 Oregon
2019 Texas

I'd say not only does it make it fun and interesting, it seems to payoff for the most part when we have talent. I realize they were not all first games but they were at least the second game with a non-conf power 5 matchup.

And it's great exposure and money for the program. College football is an arms race. You don't win that by playing no one out of conference.

Only one of these was a season opener. You’re 75% proving the OPs point.

And the one that was a season opener is the only year on the list we didn't win a natty (even though they're the 2nd best team on the list imo)

No way. I like those big games. Gets us national attention. And I think the whining about teams playing week 0 games is loser mentality. If week 0 games were such a big deal, why don’t Alabama, Ohio State, Georgia, Michigan, etc. play em?

What? Only the Oregon game was an opener, so that list is pointless.

And listing Va Tech... it was 2002 that we OPENED with them, and just like Fla State last year, they scheduled a cupcake before us. And just like last year, we played sloppy, and had a lot of kinks to work out (that the opponent did the week before), and we lost.

2002 Va Tech
2021 UCLA
2022 Fla State

3 P5 teams to open against, all had a game the week before. All beat us. I suspect that had we played them later, we win all 3.

Dude, we were terrible in 2021. I don't think it mattered when we played UCLA.

nonsense. Go back and look at Bama’s schedules. They often play a tough OOC game to start the season.

This century when opening with Power 5 schools we are 10-5 and should really be 14-1, the Virginia Tech game being the only game we were just flat out beaten all game long...Les Miles last year debacle with Wisconsin and CEO last two years with his not giving a shite were inexcusable...last years FSU with BK trying to figure out who could play where rebuilding from 39 players still could have been won...

More times than not when LSU has their shite together they win opening day against Power 5 teams...

2002 Virginia Tech L
2004 Oregon State W
2007 Miss State W
2009 Washington W
2010 North Carolina W
2011 Oregon W
2013 TCU W
2014 Wisconsin W
2015 McNeese cancelled so 2nd game was your first game Miss State W
2016 Wisconsin L frick Les Miles
2017 BYU W
2018 Miami W
2020 Miss State L
2021 UCLA L
2022 Florida State L

I'll take a different approach here-

I don't think we were 'terrible', I think we were behind the curve and undeveloped all season long. We beat them, and both teams are 7-5.

Play a couple cupcakes early, you figure out what you can and can't do. You then go into tougher games with a better sense of how to attack them. If we played like we did against Arkansas and A&M that year, we likely win.

Losing a competitive game against a non conference opponent in the first game of the season doesn't hurt your chances of getting in the playoffs.

Playing a rent a win in the first game of the season, regardless of score does little to help you.

Not in the playoff era. It’s better to hit the ground running, a non conference loss week 1 doesn’t hurt you if you lose but can help your resume a ton if you win.

You also get better by playing the best.

Plus as a fan it’s way more fun so win-win

Losing to FSU did nothing to hurt our playoff chances last year, but it was a super valuable learning experience for a young team that will help them this year

I like that we’re playing the biggest game of the opening weekend. Exciting for the fans and players are more dialed in as well during the offseason, especially being a revenge game.

hes referring to this upcoming season. they play MTSU to open the season. In fact, LSU is playing the only marquee game of the entire opening weekend. There’s the week 0 games the week before ours, but of those several games none of those are very interesting either.

Doesn’t really matter to me. Either the coaching staff did their job well enough to prepare the team to play well or they didn’t. With that said, I fully expect LSU to play well and win.
