Only one number is retired. All numbers besides 20 are available. Having a jersey retired is not the same as having a number retired. Yall are freaking out over something that isn’t happening.

Yes, tired of all the duplicate numbers. Believe it or not, it didn't used to be that way.

Under a provision of the LSU jersey retirement bylaws established Jan. 1, 2007, the retirement of an athlete's jersey in a particular sport does not preclude a current student-athlete in that sport from wearing the jersey number in that or any other sport, subject to the discretion of the head coach. This provision applies only to jerseys retired after January 1, 2007. The numbers worn by Maravich, Pettit, O'Neal, Cannon and Bertman may never again be worn by future student-athletes in their respective sports.

Retiring a number that didn't win a Heisman or National Championship seems like a stretch, to me.

He was a stud running back, when the running game was king.
Heisman contender.
Should have been done long ago.

unpopular take: retiring numbers is out of control
Been saying this. It's ridiculous. I assume this is just the jersey and not the number though. If so, I am fine with that.

Not happy about #4 being taken out of the rotation. Really don’t like retiring numbers as I think there are better ways to honor that contribution. I love the #18 and #7 traditions and would rather see #4 go in that direction.
As an athlete I’d rather see #4 on the field than in the rafters.

You want a tradition? How about #1, meaning LSU needs to win the 1st game. Haven't done that in 5 years, and its a good chance it'll be 6. Nothing but nonsensical crap. I'd rather have a player wear a "C" for captain, like they do in hockey. The only "traditions" LSU should stick to is wearing white at home, playing neck, piss balloons, tailgating, walk the hill, night games, having a great band, and leaving at halftime. The number stuff is totally retarded, that is really honoring a former knucklehead coach. So stupid

I got to meet Charles a few weeks ago. Great guy and a great Tiger.

Shaun Alexander absolutely trucked me when I had the misfortune of attempting to tackle him when I played at State. That man was a beast as well, must be the Alexander surname. He also told me "better luck next time honkey" afterwards, definitely made me rethink my football goals.

Retired jerseys is NOT why there are duplicate numbers
Offense and defense want to wear the same stuff, nobody wants to wear 37. Honestly I don't understand why anyone cares

You always retire the jersey, not the number.
Now we lose recruits who demand to be #4.

18 "tradition" should be retired too, and go back to normal. Les Miles is gone, people
That started before Les.

do you seriously think retired numbers is why we have duplicates?
in 2019, only the #20 was unavailable.
yet there was 23 numbers duplicated on that roster.
give one of them the retired number and there is still 22 duplicates.

is a current tend that has nothing to do with retired numbers.
LSU had 3 numbers that weren't "available" last season but had 33 duplicates. Meaning even if you add 5, 9, and 20 back into the mix you still have 30 numbers duplicated.
and actually, if 5 and 9 were available, chances are they would have been duplicated too (9 was a duplicate in 2019 ; 5 was a duplicate in 2023).
but all of this actually a moot point.
37 & 21 are hanging in Death Valley, but those numbers are still being used.
the same thing will happen to 4.

My only regeret is Hokie is no longer here to share the moment. They were a great combination. I can still hear the great John Ferguson broadcast:
Ensminger down under center, Gajan is the up back and Alexander dots the I.
