The pickoff throw to first, in college ball, seems to result in way more errors (that result in bases gained) than it does actual outs.

When Aaron George was on last year he was fun to watch. He’s been good in his appearances so far, if he’s consistent, we’ve got a short relief weekend weapon.

I would LOVE to see someone break those stats out, but it's not all about outs. It's about keeping runners on first instead of streaking 90 feet toward second as well. The odds are heavily in favor of the runner on a steal. Something like 2/3 of steal attempts are successful, so you want to keep that guy from even trying.
Think of it like this. If you could trade two errors on pick offs that moved men to second for the three steals we've given up so far, would you?
