Q for the baseball gods: During his post game, JJ said that in the first inning of game 3, the Vol batters "knew what pitch was coming...said it was a pretty funny story", but no one asked the follow up.
Any idea what he was talking about?
Thanks.

I think Evans was tipping his pitches and the Vols hitters had studied it before-hand

Agreed. I thought it was interesting that Milam had a rather long conversation with Evans on the mound 1 pitch after the CJJ mtg. I think he was talking to him about what he was seeing & hearing. Evans sure did a GREAT job adjusting and sat them down for the most part thereafter.

Think of the ways a hitter would know the pitch and it’s one of them. Could be tipping, could be stealing (yes, still possible), could be us accidentally sending it to them via the com.

I would think that Tennessee picked up on Evans tipping his pitches at one point. Then someone from the LSU dugout picked up on whatever signal Tennessee was doing to relay the pitch to the batter.

I would love to know what the Tennessee batter were seeing during that 1st inning.

Evans was awesome after that. I love his efficiency.

That seems impossible

I've heard of teams honey trapping the equipment manager and getting an extra ear piece.

probably actually pretty easy
the two teams use the exact same system just on different frequencies.

probably as simple as a switch somewhere on the transmitter.

You would think it would be but I would guess it could happen.

Makes sense as they were hitting him hard first inning and didn’t score another run the rest of the game. Good for him for adjusting and having his strongest performance of the year.

I would have to imagine that it's not simply "flip a switch and we can see every pitch that the opposing team is about to throw" maybe I'm wrong though

it's not as mysterious or mystical as people think as to what pitch is coming, if you listened closely to Todd Walker, that's the mindset of a hitter, he said several things that are common thought process for a hitter that I've mentioned on here before and got hooted down because no one on here had ever heard of

Cant be sure, but if you watch the replay of the first inning, watch when fischer gets to 2nd base. He starts gesturing with his right hand very obvious towards the hitter the pitch before the mound visit by jay and the pitch after before milam visits. I think milam obviously saw what fischer was doing (it was pretty obvious). No idea on the tell though. Maybe it was seeing evans grip on the ball or movement in the glove from 2nd base. Maybe it was something hernandez was doing worh his glove.

But either way, im not convinced it wasnt part of their little dustup at the plate after

Operation:

• The catcher (or coach, in some cases) presses buttons on the transmitter to select a pitch and location. For example, a combination might signal “slider, low and away.”

• The signal is sent via encrypted 915 MHz direct radio connection, ensuring security and reliability without relying on Wi-Fi or cellular networks, which can be unstable.

• The receivers instantly play the audio call in the players’ native language or a customized voice (e.g., a coach’s voice or even motivational phrases), programmed to avoid confusion.

• A cheat sheet on the transmitter’s wristguard helps new users, but experienced players often memorize the button combinations.

I don’t know but I do remember seeing Hernandez using the traditional signs and thinking that was odd since we have the pitch com.

It stood out bc there looked like there were some type of misunderstanding with the signs a couple times, just not sure when the sequence was. Would have to go back and watch the first few innings.

All good on the theories but my take is Todd Walker (even though he is not a pitcher) using starter vs reliever mentality. Makes sense to me. I think we just found our 3rd starter. Now we need to find 1-2 more relievers. Shores would be good in that role assuming he can throw more than a fastball for a strike consistently. Others are still in the mix as well. Going to be interesting moving forward..... #2 after losing in run rule earlier in the week - amazing!
