Hallman was the worst. As I recall, he liked Golden Flake potato chips, drinking and chasing co-eds.

That dude stumbled into LSU due to his good fortune of having Brett Favre as his QB and Jeff Bower as his OC at Southern Miss.

Great post.

Yeah he was absolutely devastated when we lost that game. Last game of his career with bowl game on the line, a chance to snap the streak of futility. He left it all out on the field and was in tears on the field when it was over.

One thing cannot be disputed. Kevin Mawae was and still is a GREAT Tiger.

Most wont really get into Curley bashing with non-teammates. However, when the discussion is a closed group, he’s not remembered fondly;)

This always happened in a pretty closed group, family, old family friends and they still didn't openly bash him. They don't really talk about him specifically. But from the stories about them days it was clear what kind of a guy he was.

When I first met a member of that team, I didn't hear the name clearly at first. I said, "What years did you play?" He said, "Finished under Hallman. He almost ended the program." Then, I heard his name more clearly and remembered he had been an All-SEC player at the position that Curley was most known for coaching.

I said I was sorry he had to play for such a bad coach. He said, "Me, too."

True story.

I honestly believe that you can only do so well as a coach at a school if you went to an opposing university and grew up in a rival state. Think D. Craig when he was here. I know that I could only do so well coaching at Alabama compared to LSU or another school in my home state
Wrong. You should look up the Auburn-UGA rivalry, for example, particularly Vince Dooley and Pat Dye.

Several yrs ago I had a chance to talk to a Hallman player in a social setting. This was a few yrs after he had graduated. He said that one day Hallman had a "few of us big guys help him move some heavy furniture at his home." He told us to take our shirts off as his wife "loved big sweaty football players". This as she was standing in the hall, a few feet away".There are a lot of those kind of stories out there.Pure low class.

Curley spoke to the QB Club here the week of the off week in 1994. This was his final year at LSU about four weeks after the Jamie Howard Auburn debacle. Alabama had beaten Tennessee in Knoxville and Auburn had upset Florida in Gainesville so the locals are all fired up ,yukking it up --as they should have.

A local tv guy had put together a little 4-5 minute clip showing highlights of Alabama and Auburn's big wins. Florida and Spurrier had a lead on Auburn but Spurrier didn't want to sit on it at the end and it cost him.

Okay, lights dimmed, film going. Curley is right up front at the dias. Right as Terry Dean of Florida is back to throw his eventual interception, the voice narrating the highlight tape booms, "AND NOW FOR THE CURLEY HALLMAN BONEHEAD PLAY OF THE GAME AWARD!"

Place died laughing.

And if Favre had not been at Southern Miss, the whole space-time continuum would have been totally different (as it also would have had Lewis Benscotter not drifted the plane with him and Bo Rein too high in January, 1980.)

Yep, definitely left unsaid but apparent. I was thinking "Ah he invited all of his old coaches except Curley."

Not really arguing (other than its “worst”)..but Archer at least lit the match before it got tossed into the dumpster. Great DC...horrible HC and recruiter.

he was my friend's high school coach at Muscle Shoals. He was popped for operating a lawnmower drunk on the football field while there.

Archer was a good guy in over his head. He failed, but nobody hated him -- a very different situation from Hallman, as this thread clearly indicates.

Curley lived in the back of Woodstone neighborhood during his LSU coaching career. In a somewhat modest house for an LSU coach, comparing It to the houses of Nick Saban, Les Miles, and Dinardo. If that means anything to anyone on this board.

Joe Dean does not receive nearly the criticism he deserves for his pathetic job he did at LSU as AD.

Not only Curley Hallman but his screwed up and embarrassing hire of Pat Sullivan from TCU was ridiculous. After the botched Sullivan hire Joe Dean had to go to Gerry Dinardo (his only other option/finalist and offer him (beg him to take) the LSU job. It was an embarrassing fiasco.

His hit and run accident in Southdowns.

His backing into a Police Car during an LSU Baseball Regional and leaving the accident scene with the cop following him with his lights on and siren blaring all the way to the Tennis Courts.

Joe Dean drove his car into campus lake in front of the Sorority Houses.

Joe Dean refused to get rid of Dale Brown when it was obvious he needed to go.

He gave LSU Curley Hallman who was the worst LSU coach in history. Hallman ended his 4 year run at LSU with a total of 16 wins.

Joe Dean was a disaster. For you younger LSU fans Joe Dean made Joe Aleva look good. This is not opinion. This is fact.

I believe his reference was to the former OL coach who was hated by players. He went to Arkansas after the release by LSU and the players ended up beating him up. I can't remember his name, but he was hated.

You may be correct but Hallman was known to scream, yell, and curse at his players. It may have been both his position coach and Hallman as well.

Hallman had no business coaching at LSU.
