Sorry, but if you had been at LSU when i was, 91-93, you’d know that the DiNardo years weren’t the dog days of LSU, not by a long shot.. The Hallman years were the worst in LSU history, i think we won a COMBINED 6 or 7 games his first two seasons.. i still hate that he ruined the LSU experience for me in terms of the football aspect.. we still had fun at the games, but nothing like students have when the team is winning.

I don’t know unless that was his job. Oh wait, it was his job.

Vince Dooley was an Auburn grad who coached for a rival, Georgia.
Pat Dye was a Georgia Grad who coached at rival, Auburn.
Darrel Royal played at OU and coached Texas.

Curley’s problem wasn’t his alma mater it was his incompetence and his behavior. Joe Dean set the bar low and his coaches salaries lower.

Hallman was definitely not a ‘players’ coach’ , to say the least.. i had a friend who was buried on the depth chart at kicker behind Pedro Suarez.. he told a story about how Hallman hated the fact that Suarez wore a bandana on his head, so one day Hallman grabbed the bandana off Suarez’ head at practice, pulled down his pants and wiped his own arse with it, then handed it back to Suarez... Why wouldnt players like Mawae have gravitated to a coach like that?? /s

ETA i love how my iPad autocorrects ‘Mawae’ to ‘Mawmaw’

Only good story I ever heard about Curley was him standing up to Dale Brown for the football team during/after that whole fight with the basketball team....

Other than that, I love when his name pops up on the rant. The old player stories of him are hilarious. Guy sounded like a fvcking cartoon character.

Dabo grew up in Alabama and played at Alabama, and coaches at Clemson which has no conference affiliation or history with Alabama, which I pointed out in my post. Even then, there are exceptions to a rule. Reading comprehension, dumbass. My point is that someone who went to Alabama generally can’t coach Auburn or LSU wholeheartedly, or Ohio State > Michigan or Penn State, etc.

We've had other coaches who were incompetent. We've had other coaches who were terrible people.

Curley Hallman is the only one I know of in any sport at LSU who was a terrible coach and also a terrible person.

Did anyone like Hallman? This is certainly not surprising. He was the worst coach LSU ever had- not much to like personally or professionally.

Since he got hired, Orgeron has claimed he grew up rooting for the Tigers and that LSU was always his dream job.

Not surprised Orgeron struggles with the truth and bends it to fit what’s convenient at the current time.

Damn. Calling the guy a dumbass? I think it’s safe to say he’s not the only one who found your post silly. Any coach who actually approaches his job with any sense of professionalism will give his all to win no matter where he’s coaching.

Now, how about answer JohnnyU’s reply three up from your last one. He addresses exactly what you’re asserting.

ETA: Auburn-UGA are BIG rivals. Oldest rivalry in the south.

The difference between Hallman and DiNardo is losing to Florida 58-3 in Tiger Stadium in 1993 (the worst loss in the stadium's history), and beating #1 Florida in Tiger Stadium in 1997.

I was there for both of those games. Believe me, there's no comparison of the Hallman years to the DiNardo years. DiNardo made LSU respectable again. Without the improvement in those years, there's no way that Saban comes to LSU.

DiNardo was a good coach who made the fatal mistake of believing in Lou Tepper, and then continuing to believe in Tepper after it was clear that his defense didn't work. Eventually, the team lost faith in the whole coaching staff.

There was once a thread on the old "Geaux" board about Curley, by his former players.
It was revealing why the team sucked at that time. It was indicative that Curley had reached the "Peter Principle" at any level of coaching. His failure at every level, including High School proved it.

Sonny, I still have a file full of unused season tickets in my office, that I couldn’t give away during those years. Those were dismal times for our program. Only positive was that I was one of the first TAF members and was able to advance to some incredible seating upgrades. Lots of people were bailing.

yeah, don't know what the Dean/Brandt connection was all about, but Brandt was high on recommending him for some reason, did not compute with all of the brilliant moves he made with the Cowboys

My CSB about Curley:
At a coaches clinic at the Airport Hilton in Kenner. Great clinic with Bill Curry, RC Slocum, Lavell Edwards...
First day, Curly scratching his nuts on an elevator asking where’s the ducking beer?
Second day, I’m sitting in a room with the Nichols HC, Rick Rhoades, RC Slocum, JT Curtis and a couple others and he blurts out, “RC, we need to get Jesse Jackson involved on this Prop 48 thangggg.”
The whole room got quiet. RC was sitting next to me and just shook his head and got another dip from me.
