Kent Babb answers some questions about previous story about LSU/Brian Kelly

“I don’t know why anyone would consider my 2022 story a hit piece, but I guess it’s all open to interpretation,” Babb told FOS via email. “I suspect most people who are complaining about the story never actually read it.”
“My contention all along with the 2022 story is that it’s not even about Brian Kelly,” he writes in an email. “It’s really a look at one city’s vast economic gulf and what our society seems to value. Nobody did anything wrong here, least of all Kelly. I said it then and still believe it now: It’s just the sky-high cost of competing, and my only aim was to point out one extreme on the LSU pay scale and find someone who existed on the opposite end of that extreme.”
“Many readers have said I could’ve chosen any college coach in the country, and I couldn’t agree more. I chose Kelly for two reasons,” he tells FOS. “The first is that he had just left Notre Dame for LSU and a contract worth a possible nine-figure maximum, and the second is that, just months earlier, my second book—about high school football in New Orleans, a city plagued by gun violence and corruption—had just been published, so I had an intimate knowledge of Louisiana’s political, racial, and economic disparities.”
I guess he doesn’t have that intimate knowledge about South Carolina…..sigh
I gave you the pertinent quotes. It is a garbage article otherwise. You don’t have to click the link if don’t want to give the author increased number of clicks.

Corruption in New Orleans comes from City Hall.

Why not base this article on South Carolina or Bama? Why single out LSU?

not sure why you would want anyone to click that link

This guy writes a book about high school football and now he’s a worldly scholar.

Have you not been reading the board? Everyone wants to see his comments to her challenge about previous article.

Tigerdroppings requires you to link article where you are getting quotes, even if it is a garbage article.

Only thing worse than bias is pretending to be unbiased.

I read the article. The article talks a lot about racism at LSU and the cities racist past, and tries to find justification on why a white coach is making millions while black men suffer across the city.
The article does not mention the black men on LSUs staff that work at position coaches that are all making over 500k a year and the future black NFL millionaires that walk through the athletic building everyday.
The football program is not why black people are poor in north Baton Rouge.

Or the fact that a successful LSU football program is enormous for the economy of both LSU and Baton Rouge, a city made up of majority black people. We could pay less for a football coach, be less successful, and have a weaker economy and fewer jobs for Baton Rouge residents. Oh and less money for the university to pay professors all the way down to janitors.
These people can't see past the tip of their noses. Football is a business and when business is good (because you invest in quality coaches), it benefits everyone.

He painted LSU to look bad regardless. Period.
Yes, he could choose South Carolina. Also, he acted as if the state is paying that full salary.

Because Dickie V said so, that's why!

In his own home state, Dabo Swinney makes even more than Kelly, and there are big racial disparities there but he elects to single out Kelly and LSU for the economic hardship comparison between a high profile coaching position and someone from the opposite end lol

At this point, the story just needs to drop so we can realize it's a big nothingburger and stop talking about it.

Interesting that he felt the need to defend himself.

Exactly. It's activism. frick the press. They are too busy trying to teach you a lesson to realize they have abandoned the entire point of journalism to begin with.
