From Saturdays Down South...

quote:

When asked if he's surprised with how good LSU has been already this season, Kelly said he expected LSU to having something to play for late in the season.

“I don’t know if ‘surprise’ is the right word. When you take over a job and you know that there’s challenges, you don’t know how your team is going to get to that level quick enough,” Kelly said.

“… I never looked at it as 'well I’ll be surprised if we get to November and are playing meaningful games'. They were all going to be meaningful in some sense. I think what is surprising is how quickly these guys have adjusted to what we’re doing.”

Couldn't have said it better myself. After walking on glass for the last two years of the Ogre's reign, a completely new coaching staff and a depleted roster bolstered by portal transfers, I wasn't expecting much this first year.

My hope was that Kelly would prove to be a good hire and that the team would show constant improvement under his leadership over the year. A decent bowl game at the end would have been the cherry on top.

So him saying "my goal was to be playing meaningful games at the end of the year" said it best, as far as I'm concerned. The fact that "meaningful" now includes a chance to play Bama for control of the SECW wasn't even a hope at the start of the season, but here we are.

And, FWIW, Kelly is right - every game from here on in is "meaningful" in a season that's turning out to be much better than most dared hope for in August.

Just my two cents worth, y'all....

Next year is our year. To be playing this good all of a sudden is a damn good sign.

He came out after the Tennessee game talking about how this is going to be a “process”. There will be some more good days & some more bad days, seemingly suggesting that October might be a rough stretch on the schedule.

I think he’s surprised as anyone at the turnaround the team has made over the last 2 games.

I really like how Kelly throws in some actual frank intelligent honest information in the midst of typical "coachspeak."

It's really all quite a breath of fresh air after the past 15 years or so - and even stretching into Saban's tenure.

I took it as we would win some games and feel good like the last two, and probably lose a couple more like Bama and feel like it was a bad day. But all of it is part of the process.

I think we all expected to see an improvement in coaching this year but few level-minded fans expected us to be where we are now. It has been a very nice surprise. Of course I want to beat Bama with every ounce of me but I'll be thrilled with a 9-3 regular season finish also.

That's how I took it. TN game was bad. But coaching decisions aside, TN is a better team this year than LSU. They move the ball unlike any other team.

Hey Y.A. I had breakfast with Y.A. and some of his family and friends a few years ago. No other outside guests but me. I sat down next to him we talked about his playing days, when he became a scout for San Francisco I believe it was and how they asked him to scout Terry Bradshaw at LA Tech. Y.A. laughed about it becuz he said Terry would never make it in the NFL becuz he plays for such a small school with not many people in the stands. Said jokingly well I got that one wrong. He was such a humble man. Just thought I would share.

The reasonableness of expectations in terms of your overall record has just as much to do with the schedule/opponent as your team. For me, LSU is right were I thought they would be (6-2)...just in a different manner than what I expected preseason.

I thought LSU would beat FSU, then lose to Tennessee and one of the two games against Florida or Auburn because they were on the road (in fact, I think this is the first year LSU has ever beaten both in the same season on the road). The Mississippi schools wouldn't be easy games, but I was confident in LSU because they would get both at home. Even with everything from the last two years I felt (and still feel) only Georgia, Alabama and A&M have more overall talent that LSU. Others in the conference may have "equal" (or somewhat equal) talent (including Tennessee), but none better. Tennessee looks a lot like 2019 LSU right now. A team with a veteran QB playing with an extreme degree of confidence. That LSU team didn't think anyone could beat them. Tennessee is playing like that now. On the flip-side, A&M has the new Les Miles coaching them. A team with far too much talent to underachieve like they are, but an HC who is too damn stubborn to change his approach.

I expected 8-4. It looks like LSU has a really good shot to get there too giving that (assuming a win over UAB) they only have to win one of the final 3 SEC games. But this is a tough stretch. Until LSU beats a Saban coached Alabama team in Tiger Stadium again, I'll just assume it won't happen. Arkansas hasn't been as good as projected...but they are far from bad. LSU often struggles in Arkansas. Made worse by the fact that game now follows the Alabama game every year which is always a physical and emotional drain.

8-4 would be a good year. Not great. Not something that should have been totally unexpected. But good. Anything above that, and I think it would be obvious to say Kelly has done a great job in year one.

I think more than a few thought we would have a good chance to win the games we have won. I expected a victory over FSU. Beat Bama and I will be suprised and happy.

The part that really makes me proud of our players is when Kelly says he is surprised at how quickly the Tigers bought in to his program. So take that Stephen A. Smith.

I'm not saying we get to the SECCG this year, but I will say the problem we have always had, and the reason why we have only ever made it to SECCGs in odd number years, is because of the Auburn/Florida road gauntlet in even number years. This year was the FIRST YEAR we have ever beaten those two in the same year on the road. Thus, our chance of doing something special remains.

And, I like how we match up with Bama this year. They have not been suffocating up front, which has always been our Kryptonite with them. And almost every time they have lost under Saban, it has been because they have had problems containing a dual threat QB. I also like our front 7's chances of containing them from going hogwild on the ground. The biggest question for us seems to be how will our secondary match up with their WRs.

So, we shall see...

October was a very tough stretch of games. To come out of it 3-1 is a testament to how much this team has improved since FSU

A 9-3 regular season should have BK in COTY territory.

Not to mention, this season has been a joy to watch. Guess I'm not used to growth as the season goes along. Its almost like watching a movie.

I think Kelly had a general concept when he took the job that the program was in bad shape and when he got here and really delved into it, he realized it was in really, really bad shape. Can't imagine us hiring a better person to bring this program back other than Kelly.

The physical development done by Coach Flint has been outstanding and the mental development is ahead of schedule. The biggest hurdle facing the guys right now is confidence at the beginning of games and not making early mistakes. Kelly said himself that that's what is holding them back so far but when the tigers get settled into a game they're very hard to beat.

Going to be really interesting to see how our guys fare going into the fourth quarter vs Bama. The past years teams have seemed to lose any momentum they gained early including the 2019 team in the 3rd and 4th when Bama's depth and conditioning showed. I feel that LSU can go 4 quarters with anyone in the country.
