Kelly is the best HC we've had since Nick Saban

And it isn't close.

Les and O both did their part , but Kelly is on another level.

Think for a moment if BK inherited the LSU program that Les did.

I'd say an SEC championship appearance and a heisman two years removed from maybe the worst gutting we've ever had is a pretty damn fine coaching job.

Year 3 is a giant question mark but man, are you really that worried? We've had two patchwork teams and both overachieved imo.

Also our OC seems to be staying put.

Agreed.

Les Miles before LSU. 28-21.

Eddie O before LSU. 16-27.

Brian Kelly before LSU. 166-62. With a National Championship appearance, and 2 playoff appearances.

Les was a damn good coach for a period of time, and Ed brought us the greatest CFB team of all time, but they don’t touch Kelly when it comes to previous resumes. People forgot Notre Dame was spiraling into a bottomless pit before Brian Kelly arrived.

Exactly. LSU was left for dead, and has been revived in short order.

I’d say this superlative is possible.
But for now there’s no hardware so this remains to be seen.
Les and O had a lot of shortcomings. But they also each won a championship.
Yep Kelly has a ton of upside and has done some great things so far. Heisman winning QB under his helm. SEC West champ in year 1. Possible back to back 10 win seasons. All positives. Let the worst defense in school history happen. Not a positive.
Again - he could be the best since Saban but some things need to play out first before this label can be given.

That's not a high bar, but hold off until he wins a ship. Both Les and O did. Also Les was a really good coach for a large chunk of his tenure.

And with the NIL and portal debacles, it’s even more difficult to build and manage a football operation. Imagine those two previous knuckle draggers in today’s football world.

There is reason for optimism but we need to be consistently making the 22 team playoff going forward

College football now isn’t the college football we had when Saban, Miles , and O

Results may vary because it’s a totally diff environment

Hard to crown him best since Saban, after fielding arguably the worst defense in half a century.

Lotta people around here saying this year was the worst defense in history.

Folks have short memories is all I can say. This year was bad, but it wasn’t 2020 bad.

I agree. And next year's team will not be patchwork. We return a lot of talent as well as depth at every position group. We lack top end talent in the secondary, at DE and at QB, but we have it every where else. Also, the top end talent might develop at DE and QB. At corner we'll have to get it from the portal, because no returning players have the ability to be dominant.

I disagree with the general thinking that we are woeful at DB. I think we have solid depth and some adequate corners and safeties. Those freshman CBs will be experienced next season, and I expect them to be able to play. We return a former starter for Ohio State in JK Johnson, and Zy Alexander was playing well before he was hurt.

I may be in the minority, but I actually think Les would kill it here in the NIL era. With a couple of exceptions, he always had extremely physical, stout, and deep teams. QB development was his Achilles' heel. If he had been able to take advantage of a Bo Nix, Michael Penix, or Jayden Daniels coming into the program and playing at a high level after cutting their teeth at a lower-level program, we could be talking about him as one of the greats.

That said, I have full confidence that Brian Kelly will do this.

Luckily your opinion is about as valuable now as it was when you probably thought Nuss should start over Daniels.

Debatable. This year sure seemed worse.

However in 2020 we had to bring in a brand new defensive staff without an offseason to practice. Then our best player goes down the night before the first game. What excuses did this year's defense have?

Not sure what you mean by patchwork, UGA and Bama are only teams not living in portal and we aren't even sniffing the top 10 in recruiting rankings since he's been here.

I'm not trying to hate on him, but I don't think he's earned much praise yet. Let's see how we do without a heisman qb. SEC will be tough next year, even Dillon Gabriel tucked tail and ran to the big 10 now.

You gotta give Les credit where credit is due. Kelly has not one anything but a west title. He has done a very impressive job so far except for having a historically bad defense. He does get credit for the offense. I also feel in general he is probably the best organizer of the bunch. He is a professional and things will be safe with him leading things for us. Will be interesting to see what coaches excel in the new SEC and new playoff format. It will be a fresh start for all.
