That is stout. Can’t wait

If Crews leads off I am not playing the drinking game "Crew's up to bat with no one on".

I’m pretty sure you could put these guys in any order you’d like but this would be dirty.
You couldn’t pitch around any of them.

Doughty can do a number of things well. I’m not trying to confine him strictly to lead off but Johnson has gushed about him all off season. He kind of knows what he knows & im not sure how last year will factor in all that much.
Doughty was a league average hitter in SEC but was great in OOC. Coming off the Covid season he was still somewhat green. In what will be his 2nd full season it’s not out of the question that he makes a huge jump in plate discipline & puts it all together. What Johnson is seeing right now is more relevant than last year. That’s why guys like Beloso & Milazzo will get shots, too. If they went off of last year they’d be playing at McNese

But the point is that the scenarios he's addressing via the lineup construction are the scenarios that are most likely to occur.
He's *NOT* doing the old-fashioned "put your power hitter at cleanup so he can hit a grand slam" thing. He's looking at the situation distributions and planning accordingly. When he says "if the 5-hole guy comes up with bases loaded ..." i bet that he has data showing him that the 5 hole hitter is relatively more likely to wind up in that situation than other spots in the lineup.
The "don't base your lineup on potential scenarios" statement means don't base your lineup on the scenario you *hope* happens. Base it on what is most likely to happen on average.
Scenarios that are most likely to occur? Do you think Jay Johnson has figured out something that baseball managers having figured out over the last 150 years or so? Other than putting his best hitter at #2 instead of #3, I've got news for you, what he wants from every other spot in the line IS the "old-fashion" way of filling out a lineup.

Has anybody else demonstrated enough batting to crack the top-5? Or is that cement dry now?
Posted on 2/7/22 at 3:57 pm to Lester Earl
Bat your best guy leadoff or 2 hole.
Bat your 6 thru 9 guy who has the best OBP, even if he doesn't have the best batting avg. The goal is to turn the order over to leadoff. 9 hole should see more fastballs giving him a better chance of hitting himself on.
But whatever Jay Johnson wants to do I'm sure will be best for his team.

Sounds like the way the Astros build their lineup...

I think the top 4 is pretty set to start the year.
The actual order can be shuffled many ways

Lester thanks for posting that link. I feel that I know baseball but every time I listen to coach Johnson speak and answer any baseball questions I come away feeling a lot smarter than I was initially.
I realize baseball hasn't started yet and coach Johnson hasn't coached game one of this season, but I can't wait until the 18th for the opening day!!!

I dont see how a few fall scrimmage stats are more relevant here than full season stats for these guys

Doughty is definitely that 4 or 5 spot in this lineup.
4! I’d like to see Doughty and Dugas at 4 and 5. Dugas is that guy to put the fear in the pitcher when the bases are loaded.

Me too. Just wondering if those who follow the fall and spring scrimmages see anyone emerging from the pack that could challenge the top-5.

McManus & Pearson to me were the next most impressive hitters

If his leadoff guy hits one of those doubles he wants in the 9th inning of a close game, his best hitter in the 2 spot is going to get pitched around to set up a double play. Then his lefty in the 3 spot won't have a hole on the right side because with a runner on 2nd, they won't be holding the runner at first.
Good thing Berry is a switch hitter. JJ says checkmate bitches.
Morgan
Crews
Berry
Doughty
Mcmanus/Dugas. These two will probably change with whoevers hot. If Travinski is in the lineup he's another one you could put here. This lineup is scary

I really want to see the impact Jay has on Travinski

That is very hard to read. Several guys fit 1-5.
