Per NBA Draft Express:

quote:

Martin elected to shut down his workouts after receiving a promise in the first round, which many believe came from Memphis.

Whether or not this is a legitimate pledge, he's been projected in the 20s in every mock draft I've seen recently. He seems like a safe bet to go in the first round. Good to see.

It's not as good as a draft swear, but it's still pretty good.

makes no sense in the 20's when you don't know who's going to be available.

MLB teams used to overdraft people in the first round with a "draft promise" so they could pay them less.

That being said, I'm pretty sure the NBA is like the NFL where it's set how much you can pay people.

Some are speculating the promise actually came from the Milwaukee Bucks, who of course currently employ JOB III. That'd be fun to see.

Only thing I can think of is so the player has incentive to stop working out for other teams, thus giving your competition less access to information?

I just don't get the benefit for the player.

Stop working out and guarantee you don't get drafted early and make more money... What agent is suggesting this?

Not to mention there is zero guarantee that that team will draft you

Someone else falls that they don't expect and no way they pick you just so they don't hurt your feelings. They will pick BPA. And now you really slide because no one else has seen you workout and feels slighted that you didn't workout for them

nate silvers 538 projects both Mickey and Martin in the mid 2nd to late 2nd.

Nate is about stats. Memphis sees something they like. Ok. Scouts be scouting.

Doesn't seem to be Memphis's type of player imo.

I think so, he is big, athletic, and versatile.

I think they are realizing they need to get quicker and more athletic to keep up with the direction the NBA is going now.

Jarrell Martin in 3 years is going to be a totally different player. He's developing at a rapid rate. Jut scratching the surface of how good he could be

The NBA is a players league and no team wants to be the one who renigs on that promise.

There's a scout's honor, swear and a promise. Which is best?

As an LSU and Grizz fan I will say this kind of makes sense.

Grizzlies really need two things:

1) Shooting
...
...
...
...
2) A backup 4 with some athleticism.

If Grizzlies decide they can't get 1 at 25, 2 would make a lot of sense.
