In 2006 tha problem was inexperience on the OL not the RB's, no such thing as no RB's because LSU keeps RB's, but the OL was young and inexperienced back then and struggled greatly with opening up running lanes and pass protection.

I certainly won't deny that there was/is an issue with Russell concerning race, but I think it is from a smaller set of fans than others do. LSU fans love the emotional "bleed purple/gold" Tigers, and most don't see Russell in this light...probably unfairly, as he was never really an outspoken guy. But you look at the legend of Davey, which is probably overblown somewhat because he was such a great, emotional leader.

I said no running game...the reason is largely irrelevent. Though I do agree with you.

The result was Russell did not have NEARLY the ground support that Flynn got the next year with Hester going over 1,000 and Scott and Keiland coming into their own. I haven;t looked into the numbers lately, but I think the tigers rushed for 1,000 more yards in 2006 than 2005. That's huge. and even without that threat and people knowing russell was gonna' have to throw it, he still went over 3,000 yards and tied Mauck's season TD record if I'm not mistaken...and did it without being pick prone.

It just always galls me that people feel the need to take a swipe at the guy because the team was unable to win championships while he was here as if his play was somehow the reason for that. It's like blaming Charles Barkley or Ted Williams for their respective professional teams not winning titles while they were there. Sometimes even great players aren't lucky enough to play on a team that can get it done. 2007 benefitted from CRAZY luck...and we all know it. that never made Flynn a BETTER QB than Russell, just a QB who happened to be under center when 2 losses was good enough to not only make the SECCG but the NCG.

Completely agree. I think many fans mistook a casual air as laziness or a lack of concern. Unfortunately he seems to have that to the Raiders...and if he's not careful he's going to make a lot of these naysayers right.

and I agree with you regarding Ro. I LOOOOOOVED Rohan...but in hindsight, I loved him as much for his passion as I did for his play. Russell was 10X the QB that Davey was, but played with very little of the passion Ro did. and as good as Ro was, and his senior year he was VERY good, Ro's legend was made by Josh Reed being inhumanly open 75% of the time. Most solid QB's would put up great numbers throwing to the 2001 version of Josh Reed.

Always reminded me of Hershal Walker or Bo Jackson in that regard.

if i had never known who JR was and i had to close my eyes and listen to him talk, i'd picture a big black guy in overalls with a staw hat and a toothpick or piece of wheat in his teeth

Could someone tell me what JR's weight is? What is his ideal weight? How much overweight is he? The link did not provide anything about his actual weight that should have led to all the venom being spewed against JR here.

I read the comments before checking the link. It is astounding if those comments were based on the info contained in that link, which was some guy's Twitter. Talk about a biased group. WOW! While reading the mean spirited comments against JR, I assumed there was some specific, direct, factual information showing JR was vastly overweight. But to the contrary there was no factual info there. Nothing! Nada! Zip! Zilch!

Whoever, started this topic must have a vendetta against JR to start the topic based on virtually no evidence. Didn't the same thing happen last year about him being overweight? Did the guy lie in wait a full year to pounce on what may turn out to be nothing again?

I believe this hate of JR and cheering for his failure comes from the Flynn klan of rantards who always argued Flynn is a better QB and should have started over JR. And stated "I told you so" when the Tigers won the BCS with Flynn starting most of the games. For that group they will only be happy with JR's utter, complete failure. Then they can say again "See, I told you so".

Now they lie in wait to pounce on anything that could be construed as a negative against JR. They salivate with any nugget of negativity against JR. Remember the JR interview? Remember the brouhaha about his dress or the Bama Boy necklace? The type car he drives?

On the other hand If Flynn takes a couple of snaps as the backup in Green Bay, they revel in his excellence. For someone like JR, who represented LSU well and won the number of games he did, it is not right. But that's just the way it is. All types are included in LSU's fandom. I just hope he knows there are LSU fans who wish him well and thank him for what he did for LSU with humility and class.

This is A LOT of it.

JR has/had a way about him that never seemed rushed...never seemed like he was trying a ton. I never saw that as a negative...just the way he moved on the field. He throws came so easy for him that at times he looked like he wsn't trying.

I think he gets unfairly criticized for sure. He QB'ed the team through that awful 2005 season after the hurricanes and sTILL was in the NC discussion near the end of the season. If you remember, LSU was 11-1 and in the SECCG. Had some other things happened to help with SC or Texas (like they did in 2007) and LSU hadn't run out of gas against UGA they could have ended up playing in the NCG. Instead, they got drummed by UGA, JR got hurt and LSU went on to destroy Miami. Anyone dissappointed with 2005 given what we all went through is a damn fool.

In 2006 he had almost no running game, and the only two losses on the season were on the road to what were Top 5 teams at the time. The first was winnable until the shitty PI reversal call against Early DESPITE Jimbo tying Russell's hands all game...and LSU simply lost compuse to a very solid (and eventual NC) Florida team. Unfortunately in 2006, 2 losses didn't get to Atlanta but it was good enough to earn a BCS birth where JR assraped ND.

The guy went 22-4 as a starter in his final two seasons with an SECCG appearance after the hurricane season in 2005 and a BCS game slaughtering of ND in 2006 and because he wasn't under center when the TEAM achieved some championship goals...he's a goat.

Idiotic...

How can anyone defend showing up in an NFL Training Camp in this condition? I don't care what color he is or what school he played for ... his work ethic sucks.

From looking that picture the comparison to to John Williams seems appropriate. I wonder if he would lose fifty pounds for $700,000. John Willams would not.

People have been told this multiple times over the last couple of years, but the debate becomes so shrill that no one can hear it.
